TN: Ashbrook Cabernet Merlot 2008 (Margaret River)

Post by Waiters Friend »

One of my favourite small producers - it's been quietly producing very good wines for 40 years or so. Their Chardonnay and Cabernet Merlots are annual buys for me.

Alongside the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, there's a little Cab Franc and Petit Verdot in the blend. Deep purple in colour. Expressive nose with blackberry, cassis, cigars, a little Christmas cake or raisin, violets, blueberry, and cedary oak. The palate is very slightly overshadowed by a little alcohol heat (14.5%) but shows mouthfilling dried fruit (sweetness has diminished a little), fully integrated and fine tannins. The back palate and finish is the highlight - full, rich and satisfying. An excellent foil for a slow cooked lamb shoulder (tonight's dinner).

Probably won't get much better, and I should get around to drinking the older vintages in the cellar.

Cheers
Allan

Is this Cab-Merlot their only one or do they also make a premium blend? Ten years isn't that old for a bordeaux blend. Nevertheless your tasting note is quite inviting.

Cheers .................... Mahmoud.

Check out https://www.ashbrookwines.com.au/ Mahmoud. There's the "standard" Cabernet Merlot (which I reviewed) and a Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (which also contains a little Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot, but a lot less than the CM) at twice the price.

Their Chardonnay is spectacular VFM one of my absolute favourites from MR. Need to revisit the Cab Merlot based on your reviews Allan.
Wasnt that impressed 3+ years ago when I tried it last. Maybe was just too young (and I didnt have accompanying food).
