TN: Hello Melbourne

Post by mychurch »

Not yet managed to visit any small independents, which means I have been restricted to Dan Murphy's and a a number of bottle shops. Best places have been the bars my friend John has taken me to - craft beer and craft wine seem to go together.

Drank a few bottles of incredibly dull Auz Chardonnay, medium priced bubbles and NZ Sauvignon Blanc. Still, there have been a few gems

2017 Uberblanc Riesling,Gleatzer Dixon, Tasmania
Best wine so far. Rich in a Smaagrd way, with good texture and mouth feel. Yeast and Lime, stone fruit. This is nothing like the steely, phenolic Auz Riesling I have had before. Available in the UK. 3.5*

2016 Pimpernel, Small Fry, Barossa Valley
A Barossa Trouseau. Light, almost orange in style. Served chilled it has a good texture, silky, touch of bubble gum. Very round for a natural wine.

2016 Free Love, Big Easy Radio, Langhorn Creek
Interesting blend of Fianno and Vermentino Chalk and lemon on the nose. Interesting mouth feel with a fat attack followed by a really nice refreshing bitterness. Needs some Asian food. A house to follow.

2017 Tarot, Alpha Box and Dice, McLaren Vale
Wow. A light Beaujolais style Grenache.
A see-through colour. Has some weight though. Liquorice, bay leaf. Good and would be a great party wine.

I haven't tried that vintage of the Uberblanc but have liked it previously.

If you are around in Melbourne on Feb 4th, riesling riot is on the 4th of Feb (or the 7th of Feb in Sydney as well). You'd see the full spectrum of Australian riesling there as well as a bunch of internationals

That looks interesting

Sun Moth Canteen has a Victorian Natural Wine tasting the same afternoon. Drank a lot of German Rieslings over the years though, so probably I'll try the Naturals out.

Sounds good, I think I will be free to go as I will definitely be in town for a weekend event but am not sure as yet if the other half will come along. Would be nice to meet up. I'd suggest a rose in the lapel kind of thing but who wears a jacket in the middle of summer.

Cheers ............. Mahmoud.
