TN: Howard Park Porongorup Riesling 2010

Post by Waiters Friend »

Around 2010, Howard Park introduced its Porongorup riesling alongside its Great Southern riesling (which has sometimes contained Porongorup fruit). The Porongorup rieslings are generally tighter and leaner on release, and need some time to show their stuff. So, I put them away a few years ago, and promptly forgot about them  I'm pretty sure this is the first one I've looked at since release.

Pale yellow in colour. No kero on the nose, which instead shows lots of lemon, a little lime, slight orange peel, and a touch of lanolin and talc. The palate is finely balanced, with good cleansing acid and a lemon pith back palate. There's still a sense of restraint and a touch of minerality, alongside some very clean and pure fruit flavours. Long finish.

A very good example of an aged riesling - I would not have picked it for 7 years old, and it will go another 7 years easily. Plenty of room for further development.

Cheers

Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.
