TN: Torbreck Run Rig 2005

Post by Waiters Friend »

A Shiraz Viognier blend from the Barossa. Famous in its time for being one of the biggest and most expensive Barossa Shiraz.

A brooding dark purple in the glass. Massive nose of different elements all climbing over each other to express themselves (the progressive rock band of Australian wine? :)). There's dark plums, vanillan oak, a touch of dried apricot, dried oregano, dark chocolate bordering on coffee (maybe just cocoa powder), and alcohol heat.

The palate is almost as expressive (progressive?) with grippy tannins, strong supporting acid, waves of dark developed fruits, more mocha and a very long finish. Alcohol comes into play again, and there's considerable palate weight.

Possibly still too young (at 12 years of age) and an absolute monster of a wine. I thoroughly enjoyed a glass and a half, but an entire bottle would have tested me. A fabulous wine, for modest consumption.

Cheers
Allan
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

For my tastes, noting I don’t like viognier, this is undoubtedly one of Australia’s better reds. Superb wine

Not if you're sharing with a few people. Enjoy!
