Which Red?

Ok to cut a long story short i am going to send a Premium bottle of Red to a friend in Italy for his endless help and genorosity when i was there.

For under $150rrp what is a wine that will blow him away if he drinks it now? It should also cellar for another 5 years +.

Moss Wood Cab Sauv 95, Bin 389 1998, Wold Blass Black 98, come to mind. He drinks Red and White should i send a Art Series Chardonay 95? Suggestions and prices would be appreciated please.

I want him to remember Australian wine after this experience.

OK, here are some of my suggestions:

D'arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz
Kaesler Old Bastard Barossa Shiraz
Dutschke Oscar Semmler Barossa Shiraz
Torbreck Run Rig Shiraz
Saltram No 1.

I have drunk 2 bottles of the '95 Lewuin Estate Chardonnay, and it was the best Aussie Chard I've tried, without doubt. I reckon it will be looking a little tired now though. Perhaps look at some of the BEechworth Chardonnays.

I want him to remember Australian wine after this experience.

For impact, breathtaking, profound and to impressed;
Any Noon's 2001/2002. There is no other region in the world or any winery in Australia that can produced these blockbusters.

If you want him to remember stuff that's uniquely Australian, send him a Tyrrell's HVD Reserve Semillon 95, a Seppelt Show Sparkling Shiraz 94 and a Rare Muscat or Tokay.

Other possibilities:
Wendouree Shiraz (or perhaps Shiraz Mataro)
Veritas Hanisch (or Heysen)
Clonakilla S-V
Turkey Flat Shiraz 02
Seppelt St Peters 98 (or 02 when it's released)
Warrabilla Parola's Reserve Durif 02
Rockford BP 98 or 99
Houghton Show Reserve Shiraz 95
Noon Eclipse 02, if you can find any
(whites)
Grosset PH 02
Cullen Chardonnay 02
old Tyrrell's Vat 1, or 84 Lovedale

Some of these needn't break the bank, but the quality is there.

Bobsi, 95 Moss Wood is good but the 98 Wolf Blass Black is a bit oaky and the 98 Bin 389 is not a wine I'd think of in my top 200 choices.

Maybe break the $150 into two bottles and get him something that only Australia does.

As others have suggested Noons is amazing stuff, the 2002 Noons Eclipse is a beauty that should sit him down.

Leeuwin Art Chardonnay from one of the great years, how about the current 2001?

A Rutherglen Muscat would have him licking the lips!

Don't forget that Gavin at Auswine can do gift packs so could be a first port of call for you, very easily arranged and he's always got a great selection.

Mmm Seems like Im down to about 4 wines.

95 Art Chard is the best Chard ive had and although i havnt tried the 2001 Art Series Ive heard enough good reports to consider this.

Moss Wood 95. I already have a couple of these.

Noon Eclipse 01/02 as recommended.

Fox Creek Reserve 1998. How would this compare to the Eclipse?

For the now, your first three were terrific choices, Bridgeman.

The Clonakilla '03 SV, Rockford '98, Seppelt '98 St. Peters or the '95 Houghton Show for 5 years time.

Any of the myriad of monster Barossa shiraz you need a knife and fork to consume.

Your Italian mate won't forget as long as you tell him to consume after dinner in a port like fashion.

He would probably be used to a wine/food friendly culture of which his wines are and ours are often not.
