Vale Wayne Stehbens

Post by mjs »

Wayne Stehbens, the senior winemaker at Katnook, who made every vintage since 1979, won two Jimmy Watsons and numerous other awards, died early on Sunday morning. He was a proud supporter of Coonawarra and will be missed by Michelle and family, the Katnook business and the Australian wine industry. We saw him a few weeks ago, ebullient as ever, at the Retrospective and Masterclass Tastings which were part of Cabernet Celebrations in Coonawarra. My sincere condolences to Michelle.

Met him a few years ago when i was down there for cellar dwellers. Such a loss as he was admired and adored by many people. He made wonderful wines and the world is a lesser place now.
Rest easy Wayne.

Sorry to hear this, may he rest in peace. I never did meet him but I very much enjoyed my cellar door experience at Katnook which was no small reason why I bought 1998 Katnook Cabernet when I came home to Canada.

Craig,
I have been trying to find out his age, with no luck, I suspected early 60’s, which is a bit scary
Just picked up a magnum of ‘98 Odyssey a week ago, will treat it with respect
Cheers, Malcolm

Malcolm, reported by Tony Love in the Tiser in Drinks (might be a nationally syndicated column).

Well done on the 98...think I will get a few of the 12's.

Oh very sad news, thoughts with his family.

No surprises that I enjoy his wines. Met him a couple of times in Sydney some time ago, very down to earth guy.

Will crack a bottle at the next event or two in remembrance.

Does anybody here know the reason why Katnook is not listed in Jeremy Olivers's 2016 wine buying guide?

This is very sad. Chatted to Wayne every year at the Coonawarra Roadshow and he always found a couple of minutes to talk about his wines, the vintage or his pick of the vintage if you asked.

Terrible to die so young

Will open a bottle of Katnook tonight.

Cheers

Michael
