Wine Insurance?... or not!

Post by Christo »

Hi all,

I wouls like to pose a question to all you wine lovers:
Do you have your wine insured?

My meak cellar comprises just over 440 bottles of wine 400 red, 30 fortified & the rest c-thru.

My wife constantly harp on the amount of money i spend on wine & claims i should insure it (separate to H&contents). I started on wine about 7 years ago when i was 21yrs & haven't looked back.

I look foward to reading your thoughts and opinions, & reading the results of the poll.

Regards

Christo

Not bad proportions, a few too many c-thru though I think ;-)

Re insurance: I have mine included in my NRMA contents policy, they keep assuring me there is no need for special mention/policy endorsement as long as I have good records. I have lots of pictures and a comprehensive database (with multiple backups) as well as keeping receipts (also in case of faulty wine claims).

I've been drinking and collecting wine for over 30 years and the last 8 years or so have seen the cellar almost quadruple in size as part of my retirement drinking strategy, the complete cellar report by producer/wine/vintage runs to well over 20 pages, I haven't actually ever showed it to NRMA, I just keep increasing the amount of the contents insurance.
Cheers
Brian
Life's too short to drink white wine and red wine is better for you too! :-)

Gees Brian, give the poor guy a break, he could be a red bigot in the making and some of those c-throughs may even be Frog bubbles which are allowed.

As far as insurance is concerned, my cellar was your size for decades and it was always insured as part of my contents. Some years ago, when it started to grow in size, it became a specified item on my policy as at the time, the insurer needed any collection over $2,500 to be specified.

About five years the broker (on behalf on AMP) asked for a list. After their fax machine choked, they said they would never make that mistake again. :) Now, because of a change in policy requirements and having the wine in a separate location to my house, it costs me about $800 a year to insure it, but it is a small cost for the peace of mind.

Thanks Brian & Ric,
i appreciate your feedback.

and yes the c-thru consists of 6 frogs bubbles (lanson & veuve), & 2 petaluma picadily & 2 lakes folly chard. The only two chrds i drink.

As for red bigot (new red bigot -NRB- perhaps?) in the making definitly!!...

Thanks for feedback on insurance, will contact my broker ASAP. Have to add, i read your pages daily - Torb & RB buyers guide.

Keep up the great work.

regards

Mine is also insured as part of the contents policy. Was NRMA, now back as RACV. Very glad I did insure, had a significant claim a couple years back. I provided the insurer with the database, they engaged the services of a wine auction house professional and the clain was promptly settled. No problems at all.

I too have insured through NRMA backed insurer, got the same response as TORB. Wrote a letter and provided cellar listing and asked them to confirm cover under contents, got a call to confirm but would have liked a letter. Confirmation to the effect that all bottles individually covered up to maximum of $500 per bottle.
