Heat Affected Henschke 98's

Post by JamieBahrain »

Torb has dropped a bombshell on his web page.

Henschke rep's have indicated the controversial 98 Mt Edelstone was cooked at the winery.

Having 12 bottles of this wine myself, purchased and immediatly transferred to climate control, it would seem a waste of time.

But some tasting notes are glowing- Calliard's Mt Ed verticle etc.

How do people feel about this?

With the variation of tasting notes from one extreme to another, maybe only a percentage of the batch affected.

HofG 98 may be a gamble too!

Disappointing considering the loyalty and blind faith Henschke receives.

Try one and let us know.

Mr.Cailliard is always enthusiastic because he got plenty of wines to flog.

How do people feel about this?

Disgusted

Most ppl. won't know what they are drinking. It's Henschke so it must be good

Let's face it, not only Henschke batch 1998. Every other bottle purchased is risky. Too many variables - corked, cooked, faulty, contaminated. We won't know till it's consumed.

Jamie,

Just for the record, I didnt say "cooked" I said heat effected. Apparently the wine was moved into a new unairconditioned facility and then there was a record run of hot days. That did not mean the wine was cooked, but if there is brett in a bottle, that adverse temperature can effect the wine.
Cheers

Ha ha ha. I don't often laught out loud at things I read on wine boards (even when people are trying to be funny), but I thought this line from Ric was priceless. "French wine lovers may be prepared to shell out $300 for a stinky wine that is not particularly enjoyable but we have higher expectations for our wines in Australia."

I've not tasted 98 MtE for a few years (I detected no real problems with the few tastings I've had in the past), and have 4 sitting at home. Perhaps the time has come to broach one of them...

Not mentioned was 98 Cyril. I've a couple of bottles of that as well. Yikes...

Wonder if Mr J Oliver is permitting himself a small grin...? :)

cheers,
Graeme

Heat causes "Brett"(stinky marmite nose) so is unhygenic elevage(upbringing). It can blow away after some minor aeration.

To some, it's complexity

Eden Valley and 40 degree consecutive days -heat affected versus cooked?
