September 2017 Purchases

6 x 2015 Galatrona Merlot, Petrolo. Not normally a merlot drinker, save for a few right bankers that are now out of my price range, but the hype around this release persuaded me.

I'm sure you guys wait until the 1st of the month before pulling the trigger. That's ~ 8 cases before we even get to the 1st over here

In my case, the Marius wines are only released on the 1st, and sell out by the 2nd probably! So that's my excuse

Felix, have you tried the Usseglio? I have a few other ChNuP tucked away but this is a new winery. However as they always turn up in articles as one of the top recommended wineries in the region so I thought I would give it a try.

12 X Swings and Roundabouts 2014 Margaret River Cabernet Merlot
Over on SA west coast checking out the whales (heaps around) and dropped in to Boston Bay winery in Port Lincoln. Bought a 13 Cabernet and a 15 merlot.

It's great seeing the southern right whale back in numbers. They only started arriving again in 2004 after almost being wiped out. Saw about 25 mothers and calves. Best viewing at Head of the Bight on the Nullarbor and on boat at Fowlers Bay. They are just bobbing around on the surface feeding the calves appearing to be on holidays so viewing is excellent. Calves are oh so cute.

Great road trip and well worth the effort.

Hey Rens

Yes, opened one last week. Nice, but not amazing. Definitely still hanging in there. Not a lot of fruit there, but the structure and tannin are both nice. Benefited from a couple of hours in the decanter. Given it is 20 years old and under cork you can't extrapolate much from a single bottle. Interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers

I don't have a lot of experience with Medoc wines (probably none come to think of it). I would like to have some for the cellar but trying to find something good (read okayish) without re-mortgaging my house looks very difficult and it is hard to find any on tasting to try before taking the plunge.

1 x 2015 Guimaro Ribeira Sacra Mencia
From my local coffee shop, who also sell an eclectic range of natural wines, artisan beers, plus unusual spirits and fortifieds, all from a relatively small shop, and always with a very friendly welcome - including a glass of something interesting offered up for a taste.

I don't either Rens, it was bought on spec. Typical Haut-Medoc? No idea!

Happy to share a bottle if you want to come over for a glass or two?

Each year I share a buy of Cecile Tremblay with a friend in HK, which we source direct from France. Have just finalised a mixed 2 dozen of the 2014 vintage. The bad news is only one grand cru (Chapelle Chambertin) in the mix this year, but we are not complaining as we are happy to drink village wines from this domaine as they are arguably as good as premier crus from a lot of other makers. The same wines were offered to us by a new online outfit in HK specialising in burgundy at about double our landed prices.
