Committing infanticide

Post by Dragzworthy »

Before I begin, my apologies for what I must do.

I have been invited to a wine event in several days time by my colleagues who are mostly French and English. We will be having a four coursd degustation at an italian restaurant that permits BYO. It has been suggested that i fly the flag for Australia and bring a "kangaroo wine". Now, I'm more than willing to do so but it occurs to me that whilst I have strong wine that will perform well, I don't have anyghing mature in its window. Can I therefore ask, if in my boots what would you bring from the following list and how long to double decant the evening prior (we are voing after work and I cannot decant in the office!)? And yes, I am trying ti avoid buying given fridge capacity...

Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
Penfolds St Henri 2013
Yarra Yering Dry Red No1 2013
Oakridge Chardonnay 864 Funder & Diamond Vineyard Drive Block 2013
Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna 2013
Coldstream Hills Chardonnay Reserve 2014
Jamsheed Seville Syrah 2013
Grosset Polish Hill 2016 Riesling
Paradigm Hill Pinot Noir L'Ami Sage 2014
Petalum Coonawarra Cabernet Merlot 2012
Pierro Chardonnay 2014
Pikes Reserve The Merle Riesling 2016
Pooley Pinot Noir Butchers Hill 2015

Your thoughts highly welcome!!!

Thanks in advance.

I doubt they will understand the Grosset... I would suggest one of the Chardonnay or Pinot options.

I was thinking Chardonnay as well, where typically youth is not an issue, even though age can/will offer more interest.

p.s. My pun-loving humour always prefers the term 'vinfanticide' :)

Actually I agree vinfanticide is probably better ... it might lead to some untoward questions if the authorities misunderstand what you were talking about!

I agree completely with the chardonnay recommendations, as the ones you list are all excellent examples. Not so long ago you were talking about an older Copper Trail Shiraz that that you said was drinking very well. Is that not an option?

Literally out of everything mature except Bordeaux and Italian wines... don't want to bring those to the crowd!
Sounds like Chardonnay it is, maybe the Pierro...

I would prefer the Pierro, or second choice the 2012 Moss Wood. Have a great time!

I'd go the Oakridge after a 2 hour decant myself, lovely wine. Or even a quick double decant in the morning, then cap back on into the fridge and serve that night. Not tried the Pierro but that would be my second choice. If you're looking to show something Aussie is doing very well at the moment, it's Chardonnay. Although Grosset PH would be my third choice. Have a great night, look forward to hearing about it if you have time to post!

So decant for a few hours, back into the Bottle, put the screw cap back on, refrigerator and take out in evening?

Will definitely let you know how it goes!

Yeah but if double decanting in the morning, even just a few minutes decant should do the job, the act of double decanting alone should suffice to start the wake up and smell the air process. Oh and don't serve it too cold...

Take the St Henri, at least the Poms might have heard of Pennies, and that will deflect the heat, you can get onto discussions on how great Grange is and what a fantastic VFM proposition   ...that should have the after dinner drinks coming earlier too!

Failing that the Petaluma is the only other one I would consider.
Cheers

I don't think people need to "know" the wine, that implies they're drinking the label. The wine need only be good. For what it's worth I first heard about the Oakridge 864 chardonnays on a UK wine forum.

these would be my pick. a good spectrum of varieties and wines suited to their regions.

Personally, I would not go too over the top. I'd double decant all and back into the bottle. The Petaluma may need additional decanter time prior to dinner.

The other option it the local big box retailer. You may pick something with some age up there.

If given free rein to choose 'any' bottle, I think I would have been looking for something mostly unknown. The syrah I posted on recently would have been the sort of wine I would have been looking for, perhaps anticipating a little preconception, but also ably delivering something interesting to the open-minded.

Ideally though, the participants are just interested in good / interesting wine, which is where we all ought to be.

Dragz, you might like to try this guy as well... what is listed on the website right now is not as good as it used to be but he has had some very interesting aged Aussie wines in the past.

(apologies to Gavin for a retailer linkage, but I doubt Gav wants to ship to Singapore!)
