2015 Finniss River Shiraz, Fleurieu Peninsula (screwcap): 14.9% alc. Dark to inky purple/red. Inky, minty and slightly leafy with bold black cherry fruit matched to obvious malty oak; at first the palate is very reminiscent to me of Mike Press’s early wines, black fruits that are just over medium-weight with a large spike of acidity mid-palate, finishing with strong cedar/vanillin oak. On opening it’s easy to see how it can stand out and be a gold medal winner at a major wine show, although it did seem to fade after a few nights; I would call it a short to medium term prospect.
Cheers,
Ian
