1996 A Pernin-Rossin 1er Cru Vosne-Romanee, Les Beaumonts (cork): 13.5% alc. Medium garnet/brick. Very earthy bouquet with beetroot and mushroom, a touch of coffee grounds, cassis, charred bricks and brewed tea surfacing with breathing. The palate’s earthy, ripe, at first bordering jammy until settling down to bold, cherry cola with touches of blueberry and cassis, graphite and cinnamon, finishing with tobacco spit. Like my previous bottle at first I wondered if there was some cork influence, but as it breathed I thought otherwise; it gets better with breathing, and the tannins are now in balance with the fruit. It’s in a good place now, but good bottles will should hold and possibly improve on this form.
