50 Year Grange Vertical

Post by RogerPike »

No, I wasn't one of the lucky few, but one who was tells me that the consensus view was that the '97 rates right up there with the '96 and '98.

I don't really follow the Grange secondary market but I suspect that the '97 can be picked up at a BIG discount to the '98!

Hi Roger

I think with Grange being a multi-region blend and the wine-makers having access to the best fruit, that there is not too much variation between vintages anymore.
I think the speculators get caught up in the vintage hype, and with a little help from Southcorp, drive the prices up accordingly.
Still.....one of the worlds great wines....I wonder what % of the wine actually gets consumed down the track or will the majority stay in the secondary market loop.
(P.S) I work for a retailer and our 97 is $300 cheaper than the 98....so there you go :?

Cheers

Dave

Are you talking about the Rewards of Patience tasting held this week?

My local supermarket still has Grange 97 on the shelf NZ$295. About 2-3 weeks ago there was also Grange 96 there for the same price (didn't look yesterday). The '98's were never seen on the shelf but at the time they were momentarily 'out the back' until those who had ordered them picked them up, the price of the '96 and '97 went up by $100 a bottle. Now its back to normal.

Cheers,
Sue
