What are you drinking on Australia Day?

Post by Croquet King »

I've got some friends coming over so we'll be having a few Lakes Folly

Chardonnay 2010
Cabernets 2004
Cabernets 1994 (Magnum)

It will be served with lamb cutlets on the bbq as well as some slow cooked lamb shanks.
I appreciate all forms of alcohol, as long as its wine.

Thanks for the reminder. Mentioned to my wife this morning, with visions of our helper's amazing cooking skills, baking a pie with aussie organic mince and mushrooms, King Island cheese in the mix and a bottle of something Barossan and wonderful.

So anyways, bah humbug responds with " So what are we celebrating? " .

So here we go. They're are everywhere- I reckon Trump has empowered them. So I said we are celebrating invasion day.

My wife dislikes raw seafood and spirits so I tempted to dish up sake and sushi and the invasion day theme albeit 1942.

Going to a BBQ at a friend's house where the theme is bring something from your heritage's cuisine. We have a mix of American, South African, Spanish, Italian, Greek and Vietnamese coming so should be great fun.

I'm taking a Primo Joseph Sparkling red and a 2012 Bin 389. The 389 is the only fuller bodied Aussie red I have in the house at the moment and it is a quintessential Aussie blend, so I will sacrifice it on the alter of youth for the cause.

Oh and since my wife and I are both multigenerational Australian, we are taking lamingtons for dessert :)

Champagne Nicholas Feuillatte Brut Reserve NV

Rich and lemony, hint of honeysuckle and unsweetened pastry, pretty decent buying at $45

Might crack a fresh Aussie Riesling tonight, I think I've got a '16 Jim Barry Watervale that's been in the back of the fridge for who knows how long.

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?

Scored a ticket on the Meriton ferry for the ferry race so had a couple of beers on the boat, not even sure what they were though as they were served in plastic cups. Really fun day on the harbour and great to see what actually goes on at Circular Quay on the day, never actually been there on Australia day before after 43 years of living in Sydney!

Later in the arvo and into the evening a 2008 Eagles Rest Chardonnay (Hunter) and a 2013 Coates Tennyson Vineyard Pinot Noir.

I was out there too Bob, first time for me in 20 years of living in Sydney, had family visiting from NZ so good excuse. What colour was the Meriton ferry? The 21 gun salute was epic as our boat was right next to the guns, and the jets flying over was a real highlight, wow that's noise! Loved the vibe on the harbour, friendly cheers everywhere only neg was the vagabond boat had crap beer so was supping the extra dry while craving a Modus Operandi Sonic Prayer or a decent glass of vino.

2012 Knappstein Ackland Watervale Riesling. Nice fresh zippy number with some hints of age starting to show.
Lovely minerality. Could've and prob should've left it for a few more years. no kero in sight.

2008 Bodegas Valdemar Rioja Conde de Valdemar Reserva.
A touch porty and just the slightest hint of cork taint. prob a touch past it.
drank 3 of these of a 2 year period and the first was the best.

2014 Mt Horrocks Sem. Lovely drop. nice balance of fruit and oak. lovely texture in the gob.

2011 Barratt picadilly valley 'triple one' Pinot Noir. delicate light to medium drop with nice floral fruits on the nose.
A very pretty wine that was so easy to drink and perfect on mild summer day. very translucent in the glass. almost rose like.
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.

I had the Domain A "Lady A" 2012 oaked sauvignon blanc which was very good, better in 2 + years. This wine is under the radar ( not on price ) and pips a lot of high end competition at our wine dinner in HKG.

Wild Duck Springflat 2004 is just starting to un-peel and present some development and complexity. Lovely winter-warmer.

Saw a number of cars roaring around Hong Kong with Australain flags out the windows. A lot of people really getting into the Australia Day theme in Hong Kong.

I must have missed that one. I reckon the style suits our warm climate well. Fun and easy to drink. Nothing too serious. A little brash. Pairs well with lots of different foods. I image the Somms at wine bars love this sort of stuff.

The yellow one, wish I knew you were out there too!
The army band on the barge was brilliant, even watching it from behind as they were facing the people at the Opera house.
The whole thing down there at circular quay was great.

Indeed it was.

Moondarra from Gippsland do a decent one at around $20. Some bottles are... vigorous on popping the crown seal, part of the fun, get a friend to do it for maximum enjoyment ;)
