From a local auction:

- Glaetzer Amon-Ra Shiraz 2007
- Yalumba The Signature Cabernet/Shiraz 2002, 2003, 2004

Along with some 1970 Dow Port, and 2008 l'Aventure Estate Cuvée (a Paso Robles California Syrah/Cabernet blend).

Hi Rick, good to see your name again - been a while!

Opened a Freeman 2015 sangiovese on the weekend and got one of the biggest thrills of the year. Stunning wine full of layers of red and dark fruits, hints of licorice, and amazing brightness that I never quite expected.

Only available at CD as it's the first iteration of the wine for Freeman as I understand it. Went back for another 6 today. Structure suggested it'll live a while too.

Glory be, and thank you Dr Freeman.

We visited the cantina a few years ago, and compared to most in the Langhe, it was 'space age' and they were clearly very proud, including how they made a genuine attempt to blend it into the landscape. A nice touch was giving away some prints they had done up, and I still have their 'vintage chart prints' which start at 1868.

Lots of alcohol on the nose. Palate was very cinnamon, tobacco, pine, earthy and mushrooms. Lots of tannins still present so although drinking well now I think it'll be better in another 5 years.

Thanks for that. Almost by accident I have very few 2005 Nebbiolo wines. The major factor was a gap in our regular visits to Piemonte (other Italian regions got our attention) which must have coincided with the year the 2005 Normale and Riserva / Cru wines would have been released. By all accounts a challenging year, but one where there appears to be some highlights.

I wasn't especially taken by the wines we tasted at Ratti (mostly lower end for some reason) but the visit was very interesting and otherwise very hospitable (especially for a bigger producer), so we have fond memories.

Yes I wasn't enamoured with the wine, especially considering the price. Though, for some reason I seem to prefer the 'unfashionable' Nebbiolo wines in Manzone, Brezza and Paride Iaretti as opposed to Borgogno and co.

I visited l'Aventure and the Paso Robles area around 2005. Lovely wines and a great area to explore. There are some great wineries in the area and well worth the visit.

Chalked Crossing CC2 Shiraz 2014. I read on HH's site this picked up multiple trophies recently so at $18 I picked up a case to use as the BBQ/House quaffing wine. Needs time to settle but should be ok.

A good friend of mine, who is also a big fan of Australian wines, introduced me to l'Aventure. Very nice wines.

Its a great part of the world. We stopped to see both the wine region and Hearst Castle which really has to be one of the strangest places on earth. Whilst the region is known for Rhone varieties, one of the most memorable wines was a pinot produced by Windward Vineyards - a beautiful Burgundian style pinot. I also loved the fact that the vineyards gave you Riedel glasses in return for your tasting fees. We carried two home from l'Aventure.

2 x Moorooduc Estate 2014 Chardonnay

...and just finished one bottle. Picked them up at the cellar door and drank the first at the hotel not far away. Amazing wine - I'm more of a fan of the buttery/pop corn Meursault style Chardonnay and this Drivers it in spades.

I went to a Moorooduc tasting recently and of all the Chardonnays on the bench, this standard one was my favourite. I found it more complete than the single vineyard range.

Peeved off with my buying hiatus this month. Missed a superb deal on G Conterno Cascina Francia 2012. This Cru seems to be spiking toward investment class slowly but surely.
