Hi All

Haven't posted in a while so here are some notes from the recent past:

Wither Hills Chardonnay 2002

Big wine this one. Great nose of slightly off fruit v funky. Lovely golden colour in the glass and a huge mouthful of fruit, some oak and a lovely mealy finish. Was maybe a bit closed at first (too cold??) but as the bottle warmed up a bit it really came into it's own. A v classy NZ Chard but prob for those who like em on the big side.

Tasted alongside:

Rosemount Show Reserve Chardonnay 2002

Another v nice drop but more restrained than the Wither Hills. Lovely nose, golden colour and some nice fruit. A bit more acidity than the Wither Hills and probably a bit more refreshing. Nice drop.

Yering Station Shiraz Viognier 2001

I know some on here really like this wine so when I saw it I grabbed a bottle. V good value for around $20 here. Beautiful colour and a lovely perfumed nose courtesy the Viognier. Nice fruit flavours and supple. Prob bould last a few years. A v nice wine.

Murdoch Est Cab Sauv 1999 (Coonawarra)

Had this at a restaurant, was a new label to me (I'm in Canada). Absolutely top draw Coonawarra Cab. Beautiful dark colour, and a fantastic nose. Could just sniff this all night. Earthy, menthol/eucalypt nose with some tobacco..just gorgeous. In the mouth, everything you could want from Coonawarra Cab. Good tannic grip but lots of lovely blackcurrant fruit, everything in balance. I am a huge Coonawarra Cab fan and this was one of the nicest I have had in ages. Got years left in it. More proof that 1999 was a great vintage in Coonawarra, better structured than the 1998's and possibly longer lived IMHO? This would certainly suggest so.

Got some rellies in town and have a few interesting bottles lined up so will post some notes soon.

Cheers

Had the 04 Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc recently and it was absolutely fantastic. Very fresh and clean and full of passionfruit and gooseberries. Was very impressed indeed.

Had the 2001 Yering Station Shiraz Viognier for the first time tonight. A beautiful yarra valley wine in the way that only the yarra valley can - I just wish I could have shared it with Ric, I know he would have enjoyed it exactly as much as me :)

Seriously now: it's a supple, perfumed, licorice-shot wine with a pump of white-pepper on the very finish. My wife took one sip and said, "Now THAT's nice, what is it?" It's the kind of wine that would please a crowd - if I was having a wedding, this is the wine I'd serve. It's a steal at 20 bucks. I'm buying some.

I loved the Yering Station SV at the FESQ tasting. A massive nose of licorice allsorts. Might not be appropriate at a wedding, though, because some people don't like licorice.

"Some people don't like licorice".

That's why they invented verdelho :)

I liked everything about the Yearing Station SV except for the flavour profile! Structure was good but there was a green streak running through the wine I tried. It did not seem off, but by the sound of it, it may have had a problem of some sort. Also, the wine I tried was all blackcurrant with no liquorice.
