The theme was a blind comparison of Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny and Nuits-St-Georges Premier Cru's from 2010 or 2011. Would they show terroir definition ?
The opener to go with the Duck, jellyfish and shredded vegetable salad :
1998 Raveneau 1er Cru Vaillons Chablis
Citrus and stonefruit on the nose. Lemons, oyster shell and some minerality on quite a rich Chablis. Great condition for its age.
The main course :
2011 Marchand & Burch Gevrey Chambertin Fontenys 1er Cru
The Australian connection meant the sensibilty of screwcap on this wine. Lightweight dark cherry fruit and subtle Gevrey earthiness. Good length. Now onwards.
2011 Stephane Magnien Chambolle Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru
Attractive raspberry-cherry perfume kept coming up as it opened in the glass. Soft acidity and good length, starting to drink well. Everyone picked the commune so pretty archetypal.
2010 Christian Clerget Chambolle Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru
Another wine with lovely aromtatics. Raspberries and black cherries on the nose. Slightly riper than the Magnien points to 2010. Medium bodied, good balance.
2010 Bruno Clair Gevrey Chambertin Les Cazetieres 1er Cru
Further advertisement for the quality of 2010. Excellent medium weight mixture of pristine red and dark fruits with the slight earthiness of Gevrey.
2011 Robert Chevillon NSG Les St George 1er Cru
Aromatic, deeper fruit than previous wines and somewhat different structure with a fatter mid palate and less length. Rich for a 2011.
2010 Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet NSG Clos des Grandes Vignes 1er Cru
Definite simillarties to the Chevillon. Delicious sweet mid palate fruit the highlight.
2011 Jadot Chambolle Musigny Les Fuees 1er Cru
Fragrant light red fruits. Just a bit skinny on the palate compared to the previous wines.
2010 Georges Noellat NSG Les Boudots 1er Cru
Good red fruits and some attractive earthy characters. Nicely complex.
2010 Alex Gambal Latricieres-Chambertin
Both bottles prematurely aged. Colour was browning already. Corks were good so maybe a problem at bottling, allowing oxidation to occur.
Then a curio, followed by a rash of backups :
1989 Craiglee Pinot Noir - Sweet midweight vinous fruit.
2011 Chevillon NSG Vaucrains 1er Cru - Nice wine, similar to Les St Georges above but a bit lesser in all aspects.
2011 Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet Clos St Jean - Notes say high acid, thin fruit but can't even remember trying it, so who knows......
2014 Fromm La Strada Pinot Noir - Inviting new world nose - black fruits and almost a hint of cassis, oak supportive. Good soft acid spine.
In summary, the Burgundies all showed good terroir definition, particularly compared the previous dinner which compared these three communes from 2009.
