Mt Mary ?
Re: Mt Mary ?
Red Smurf. I think you are being very unfair. MM is much better than typical Haut Medoc. Pushing low to mid range level Classified Growth, I'd say.
Re: Mt Mary ?
Agree Swirler, from what I have had they are good wines in their own style and probably better wines than many Haut Medoc. We are talking comparison though. The structural elements and acid lines and intensity of many of the classed growths, especially the years mentioned above, 95,96,99 would not be comparable. From the experienced tasters above suggestions, it just proves that no one can really definitively say that a particular classed growth wine will be comparable.
That's why I would go with a good year Haut Medoc similar in structure and let the Mt Mary's shine instead of putting up a Palmer or Pichon from a good year that may end up being the best wine at the tasting.
Just my opinion though. Hope to be proved wrong.

Re: Mt Mary ?
Probably right Smurf. Depends on the objective - it wouldn't worry me if the Pichon was the best wine of the tasting as it should be given the price differential. If the point however is to compare like with like then a wine more in the Mt Mary price range would be a fairer match, and maybe that is something in a lower Bordeaux class.
Re: Mt Mary ?
On an international level, according to Wine-searcher, Quintet is actually quite similar in price to some 'off' vintages of Pichon Lalande. Using Australian prices rather skews things a little unfairly.
Of course, serious Bordeaux from top vintages generally take much longer to be approachable Than wines like MM, so 'off' vintages are probably more comparable in this kind of comparison.

Gents thanks
I'm just looking for a curveball in a blind tasting . Nobody will know til afterward though some awesome tasters in the group.
I may just settle on the 95 Palmer.
Is the Merlot that big an influence with Mt Mary?

never felt that it was overt imo

Re: Mt Mary ?
Not so much the Merlot flavour, more a structural thing. I would normally pick the Mt Mary in a left bank Bordeaux lineup because of the relative softeness of its structure and more overt fruitiness. Trying to replicate that with Bordeaux suggestions in a Mt Mary lineup.

Re: Mt Mary ?
Yes, it's the 95 Palmer as the "ringer".
Stby wines for taint- 99 Yering Station Reserve Cab and the 2006 Coldstream Hills Reserve chardonnay.
A lot of Mt Mary arriving into the HKG market in a few months but not much at the moment. Hence, the odd men out. Must be that bust wine investment fund and prices good.
