Off to a flying start once again. I keep on telling myself that it's winter and I need to take advantage of the perfect wine shipping weather while it lasts. Then when the summer arrives, I'll go on a wine buying moratorium . Plus I'm paying for all that empty space at my offsite, so the more I buy the lower my cost per bottle for storage .

Thanks Jamie. I didn't see your name come up in any bids. But I did compete with maybs for the Elio Altare and Conterno Fantino.

A good selection of old world stuff in that auction.

That's what I keep on telling myself, but resistance is futile! Unless I turn off my Internet until July, I'm still going to see all those reviews, email offers, auctions, etc. In a lot of ways, cellaring wine is just like being a kid again collecting footy cards, Hot Wheels or whatnot. Just a lot more time consuming and expensive!

This is stunning. I picked up a case on release as it was the year my first son was born. If its in good nick, its still as fresh as a daisy.

I assume it will disappear to the back of the cellar for a while?

A few odd lots from auction

2 x Miles from Nowhere 2014 Margaret River Chardonnay
2 x Punters Corner 2002 Coonawarra Cabernet
3 x NEIL McGUIGAN Signature Barossa Valley Shiraz 2012
2 x Landhaus Estate 2010 Barossa Valley The Saint Shiraz

And a case of Capel Vale 2012 Debut Cabernet Merlot. From the Geographe region just north of Margaret River and the price reflects this and the quality excellent.

I just asked the importer/retailer for Passopisciaro if I could buy some. The single vineyard cru's all sold out from pre-orders so they were never advertised. I was lucky with my timing and managed to score some.

They will indeed be having a long sleep in my cellar before I crack one open.

Hi Ian, I note you are a purchaser of Gomersal, both this vintage and previously. I went to a wine tasting in Adelaide last week and tried the 2012 reserve?? shiraz ( or at least I thought this was the reserve) and it was fantastic.
Trouble was I went on the website there is a shiraz, a reserve and then a third shiraz in a burgundy shaped bottle, which appears to be the premium over the reserve. I can't recall whether I had the base, the middle (most likely) or the top marque.

What firstly are your impressions, and is the top shiraz really twice as good as the reserve?
I am thinking of a couple of mixed cases. They seem to be great VFM prospects.

Cheers
Craig.

Craig,

I am a big fan of the Gomersal Shiraz's (as well as the GSM). Barry is a good mate, so I could be a little bias  . But I would never recommend anything that I don't rate. 2012 was very kind to Gomersal Wines with all their wines from that year being excellent. The Shiraz range goes like this:

First there is a base "Shiraz" which is the cheapest. Good VFM but not at the same level as the better two, obviously this is relayed in the price ($15). But still a great VFM quaffer. Plenty of bang for your buck. Not too many better at this price point.
The "Reserve Shiraz" is aged for longer in only American oak (some new) and at the price ($25 a bottle), is exceptional VFM. It will age extremely well and I've plenty stashed away. The beauty of this one is that it drinks so well now with a bit of air. Everyone I've had try this, loves it.
The "Estate Shiraz" (black label, Burgundy bottle) was the pick of the grapes and aged in only French Oak, mostly new ($50 a bottle). To me it is more elegant and I find the tannins a little more silken. The sweetness of the French Oak gives it another dimension to the Reserve. Same as the Reserve, it will age really well.
The Reserve and Estate are quite different, which is down to the type of oak used. I'm a French Oak lover, so obviously I prefer the Estate. But I still buy plenty of the Reserve mainly due to price and the fact it is so good right now. It's probably the more cuddly of the two wines. I'm fairly sure that 2012 was the first year that Gomersal have had 3 Shiraz's in the range and I'm almost certain that the Estate is the first time they have released a French Oak only Shiraz.
As for whether the Estate is worth twice as much as the Reserve, it's a personal thing. I guess the best way of answering that is by asking "Is Hill of Grace 6 times better than Mt Edelstone. Is Grange 12 times better than Basket Press...." I know the new French Oak is a hell of a lot more expensive than new American Oak which would explain some of the price difference.

I have enjoyed every vintage I've tried of Gomersal Shiraz. 03, 04, 05, 06, 08, 09, 10, 12. It wasn't made in 2007 or 2011 (in 2011 a Shiraz was released but not at the $25 price point as Barry didn't think the quality was there). And it's been $25 a bottle for as long as I can remember too! (for the Shiraz and Reserve Shiraz which I think started in 2010).

Gomersal have toned the alcohol down a little the last couple of vintages and the wines are better for it. The Reserve and Estate Shiraz's are from estate grapes but I'm not sure about the base Shiraz. The Reserve and Estate spend quite a bit of time in oak, 2-3 years I think. The balance seems really good though, with the oak and fruit meshing well together and neither dominating the other.

Oh and if you like your GSM's big and fruity, try and get your hands on some of the Gomersal '08 GSM. It's a cracker that will live for years. I'll PM you soon as there will be some coming out from the winery if you are interested.

Hopefully I'll be doing a vertical of the Shiraz next month with some other forumites, so I'll post some notes.

Cheers
Ian

Jury is out for me on Rosso. Found his wines a little ripe when tasted but no deep experience with them.
