McWilliams corkscrew - WARNING - nostalgia content

Post by RobK »

Going through my cupboard this arvo and re-discovered this nice old McWilliam's corkscrew and a cork from a fairly decent wine on the screw. I remember getting this corkscrew at one of my first jobs as a "wine waiter" at Baxter's Restaurant in Sandgate (Brisbane) around 1977. The corkscrew itself was celebrating "100 Years Centenary - 1877 - 1977". It is my first corkscrew with a fluted worm and still only one of several that I own that do.

Great looking corkscrew Rob, thanks for posting the picture.

What happened, the corkscrew was used on a "decent wine" and then retired?

Cheers......................Mahmoud.

Dunno. I got it when I was around 19. Then it got packed away for many years. Then this guy I met on a forum not too dissimilar to this one and he ended up sending me three bottles of wine, one being the Pauliac. I don't know why I chose the McWilliam's corkscrew because I had a few to choose from. Perhaps because as a wine waiter I had opened a lot of bottles with it and felt comfortable with it. I opened the wine with a friend and put the corkscrew with the cork back into the cupboard until today. I love these emotional time capsules of life and the way they bring back memories.

Hopefully my next painting will do the trick for you then. I have started one that's a lot about the corkscrew which is one of those chrome bench mounted models set in a Hong Kong wine bar and will have all the lighting reflections etc. So far it's not much to look at but ought to have some "wow factor" for you.

Wine geek alert!

It's a Baron de Rothschilde wine but the cork is too short to be a Mouton-Rothschilde, and Mouton-Cadet is a Bordeaux Blend, so it must have been a standard Paulliac blend.

Okay, back to the real world.

Mahmoud.
