MBSC April 1 offline

Post by Benchmark »

The Melbourne Burgundy Social Club met for its second offline on Friday night.

Theme: Cote de Nuits compared to Cote de Beaune.

Vintage: 2010.

Ozzie W acted as gate keeper to ensure we had an equal representation from each area.

Wines were tasted blind and were premier cru.

The final line up was:

1999 Billaud-Simon Les Blanchots Vieille Vigne Chablis Grand Cru
2006 Domaine Frncois Raveneau Vaillons Chablis Premier Cru

2010 Albert Bichot Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques Premier Cru
2010 Simon Bize & Fils Savigny Les Fournaux Premier Cru
2010 Domaine Pierre Guillemot Savigny Les Narbantons Premier Cru
2010 Albert Bichot Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques Premier Cru
2010 Pierre Saigon Hospices De Beaune Cuvee Guigone de Salins Premier Cru
2010 Bouchard Pere & Fils Beaune Greves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus Premier Cru
2010 Domaine Michel Gros Vosne Romanee Clos Des Reas Premier Cru
2010 La Pousse d'Or Pommard Les Jarollieres Premier Cru
2010 Domaine Naively Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers Premier Cru
2010 Louis Jadot Beaune Clos Des Urseles Premier Cru

A great night.

Even with my backward palate I was able to distinguish north from south by the end of the evening.

Pice and tasting notes to follow.

Nice work, looking fwd to hearing about the highlights and lowlights. I'd assume the Raveneau 06 showed well?

And the Bichot(s)? Same bottle twice by co-incidence or cork issue?

Cheers
Tim

Two Bichots, completely by coincidence. Try and do that again

Interestingly they were a little different, both good through

The Raveneau was excellent

The best aspect of the Raveneau was the texture. Lovely layered, almost slippery palate.
Of the reds, not too many inferior wines, as you'd hope from a great all-round vintage like 2010.
Interestingly there was slight bottle variation with the Bichots, albeit both good wines. The first one had perfumed cherries on the nose and was almost more Chambolle than Gevrey in style. The second one was more closed on the nose and had more earthy tannins - even the colour appeared slightly deeper. I'm sure they don't batch bottle but......
My other favourites were the Hospices de Beaune, lovely fruit made in the Naigeon approachable style, the Gros Clos de Reas, which is classy but needs a few years to fully unwind and the Faiveley. Everyone had been telling me they had changed their style for the better and this wine showed that - pretty fruit within a refined Gevrey tannin profile.
