Tahbilk Eric Stevens Purbrick Shiraz 2006

Post by Waiters Friend »

I purchased a six pack of this when visiting the winery in 2012. I had also had a glass with lunch that day and was impressed enough to buy the 6 pack, so I have no idea why I have waited another 3 years to open the first bottle.

Dense red purple colour. The nose is rich and complex, with dark plum, blueberry, vanilla, a touch of leather and cinnamon, and some red berries as well. The palate has great texture as the fruit, acid and fine dusty tannins combine to provide the impression of a fruity chocolate sauce. The wine is full bodied, and the finish is very long indeed.

The best wine I've had today :) This should hold for years to come, and I'm glad I'm holding a few.

Cheers

I recently bought 3 bottles of the 1860 Vines Shiraz at auction (2003) - paid about $81 per bottle which appears low judging by their current retail release price $275 from the Tahbilk website!).

Have never tried them though - any thoughts?

I had a couple of bottles of the 2003 1860 vines about 2-yrs ago - my notes are as follows. I was a fan.

I'm trying this again tonight, and the tasting note has changed somewhat from a year ago (see previous TN). It's still a red/purple colour, but the leather has dropped out and the nose is more about blueberry and red berries. Maybe it's because this has been decanted for two hours before drinking, but I would call this a medium bodied wine now, albeit with lovely texture, good acid and lots of developed fruit characters similar to the previous TN. No longer a chocolate sauce, and perhaps all the better for that.
