Old Kent River 2006 'Burls' Pinot Noir

This is one of my favourite Great Southern producers. They seem to be overshadowed by some of the more active marketers in the region, but continue to make solid reliable wines that are uniquely OKR. And occasionally, they make something special ......

The 'Burls' PN is their top of the range red. The nose is fragrant and almost perfumed, with bright cherry and strawberry fruit alongside some mushroom and developed secondary characters (a little earthiness). The palate is lively, with tingly acid, mild tannic grip and complex layers of flavours on top of the primary and secondary fruit.

This is one of the better Australian PNs I have had for a while, and at 10 years of age, stands up really well. It will go / hold another couple of years - but this is my last bottle. If you find some, grab it, and invite me round for dinenr.

A tough question. I had my last bottle at least two or three years ago, and would be reluctant to enthusiastically endorse it so far down the track. However, I am looking to buy a mixed carton from them soon, and may well get one of the 2002 thrown in.
