Auswine Tasting Panel - 27-August-2004

The unofficial drinking arm of the Auswine forum (Adelaide Chapter) gathered around at FD's place a couple of Fridays ago to relive Gavin of the onerous task of trying to quaff his way through boxes and boxes of sample wines in the hope of finding some gems to offer to his quality seeking, cyber wine customers. The wines were served blind and the results are mainly my impressions with the addition of other helpful comments that get flung around the table. The gems are below - faulty and not so good ones left out to save my fingertips the typing ....

1997 Tyrrell's VAT 1 Semillion
A white wine and no women about, oh well..... A very pale yellow color with a nose of aged reisling, slight citrus and grapefruit with hints of petroleum jelly, mineral and kerosine. The palate was well structured with lime, lemon, grassy, a touch of toast, lanolin and finishing a bit flinty. Nice body with excellent persistence.

It was hard to see the bottle through all the gold stars. Glenn made an amusing comment and suggested that for every show that a wine entered and lost they should take away a gold medal (or perhaps invent a new BLACK MEDAL class).


2002 Mount Majura Chardonnay, Canberra
Jeez, another white... The oak is nicely integrated and has rich, spicy aromas of apple, melon, nectarine and stonefruits. A pleasant suprise on the palate, quite supple bodied, savoury style flavours of candied tree bark, straw, grapefruit, smoke and spice. Great length and persisted for ages. Very good chardonnay and from what Gavin said it sounds like excellent value for money.

As soon as Gavin pulls out a red at last, Steve arrives... I am sure he must have been lurking about outside waiting for the reds to be pulled out.


2002 Kies Chaff Mill Cab Sav
An elegant nose of cherries, cinnamon and musk. A very nice palate of blackberry, chocolate and nicely integrated tannins, so far the favourite red for the evening.


2002 Kies Klauber Block Shiraz
Everyone liked the nose on this one right off. A nose of fine chocolate, coffee liquer and hazelnut. The palate has a lovely mouthfeel, elegant, great length and seamless tannins. Sexy, round fruit that rippled across the palate and lovely rich Barossa chocolate on the finish that persists for ages.


And next morning a hang over.......

I was there, lots more wines were consumed, but not noted as they weren't that good, and I won't be stocking them, which after all, is the purpose of the tasting.

Also other bottles were brought along by participants and enjoyed over a bite and a chat.

Lots of ordinary bottles were also tried, plus a few beers before it even started.

We had a 2002 Mt Majura Shiraz that night but I was out of the room getting some food for my kids and someone else was taking notes, noboby liked it accoding to the scribble on my paper.
