Rens & Kelly: Greenock Creek – 2001 Creek Block, Marqués de Riscal Baron de Chirel Reserva Rioja 2005
Luke & Janine: Kinzbrunner chardy (Toolangi Reserve 2002) plus older Red??
Perry: 2002 Classic McLaren La Testa Cabernet Sauvignon
Waiters Friend: WA Chardonnay?? and Cabernet Sauvignon??
Simon (bigtinnie) + 1: Hunter Semillon??, Yalumba Signature

Re: Its Winter - Brisbane Offline - July
I'll bring a Thomas Allen Alasdair Shiraz 2010 (Hunter Valley) as something new and out of left field. I'll also have a hunt for something else.
Re: Its Winter - Brisbane Offline - July
I think we'll go close to corkage exceeding the food bill... Only at a Brisbane off line...

Re: Its Winter - Brisbane Offline - July
Just me now - scrub my wife - she's had another offer she can't refuse. I'll still bring the Toolangi unless otherwise directed and a backup Penfolds Cellar Reserve Bin 05a Chardy in case the Kinzbrunner has gone past it's use by date.
If you can remember what a wine is like the next day you didn't drink enough of it

G'day. You can take the question marks away from what I will be bringing. WA Chardonnay and Cabernet or Cab Merlot. Both Margaret River. Looking forward to it.
Cheers

Bummer Luke. What could be more exciting than sitting around listen to us bang on about wine....... (fortunately we don't do that too much!).
I was talking to Yas and telling her that a lot of partners are going so she would like to come, so please don't amend the numbers Gerry.
I will probably bring a Riesling (Seppelt Drumborg) or Sauvignon Blanc (Cloudy Bay or Te Muna Road) as well.
Cheers

Gerry,
Sorry to do this, but unfortunately I am now double booked with a celebration I can't really justify missing.
I truly am gutted to miss out. I fought to have this celebration on another day but I'm only one against many.
My apologies and thank you for organising I hope it is a fantastic evening.

Re: Its Winter - Brisbane Offline - July
Gerry,
No problem with the Ballycroft wines, serve them whenever you think is right. Bear in mind they are quite big wines.
Seeing as you've put the Greenock Grenache in with the two Pinots, would you prefer I bought an '06 Gibbston Valley Pinot (NZ) or an 06 Saveterre Pinot (Beechworth) instead. That way we can have a flight of Pinot. Not my thing but maybe better for the group. Just let me know which one you would all prefer.
Oh and I like the look of flight 5!
Cheers
Ian

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?

Re: Its Winter - Brisbane Offline - July
It's Ian's wine, but I think the Greenock Creek Cornerstone is going to be too big for the Pinots and would probably be better replacing Clive's Shiraz.
Otherwise, I think you are on the money, Gerry.

What Ian and Michael said.
With all this wine coming to the offline, you've overlooked the Baron .
My thoughts are it would be prime for flight 4 seeing it has cabernet in it (one of the only Riojas that is permitted under the D.O. to have it)

Re: Its Winter - Brisbane Offline - July
Thanks indeed, Gerry, for following through with the arrangements. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Brent can do with the menu. The one previous occasion I have been to his establishment, I was greatly impressed.
I like the way the order of service is looking. Has there been any thought to having a raft of decanters on standby (or, better still, double decanting before arriving)? As I am flying in, the latter option is unlikely for me in my hotel room, but double decanting might be encouraged for some of the wines.
This looks like being a fabulous night, and I look forward to meeting you all. As you may have realised from some of my previous tasting notes, I will be pressing you for comments and opinions on each wine, and writing up a collective set of tasting notes - unless someone else wants to do it. Any volunteers? I didn't think so
Cheers
Allan

How does 7:00 pm start sound for a Friday night, or would people prefer 6:30 pm. Also do we have any other food allergies that I need to let the restaurant know about besides seafood for Alan.
Cheers Gerry
Re: Its Winter - Brisbane Offline - July
No allergies etc here
Given the amount of wine, I'd go for the earlier start time giving us plenty of time to enjoy all on offer.

Happy to start at 6.30pm, but more than happy to wait until 7pm if that suits some people better. In practice, a 6.30pm start usually means 6.45 at least before most of the people arrive

Please remind me - is it $100 per head to cover Brent's tailored menu?

Re: Its Winter - Brisbane Offline - July
Folk’s,
5 Course Menu has been sorted to match the 5 flights of wine with cheese at the end. A few of us do enjoy a port, so I am sure some will be brought to close out the night with the cheese. Cost is $80 per head and I don’t think anyone will be disappointed with what Brent has put together. Just to keep it special I will leave it as a surprise for the night.
Have not heard back from anyone else on start time, so perhaps we go with a 6:30 to 6:45 pm arrival and enjoy the 08 Majella sparkling shiraz to get kicked off.
Cheers Gerry

Re: Its Winter - Brisbane Offline - July
Fantastic, Gerry, and my hearty gratitude for the arrangements you've made.
My case is partially packed (the wine is already in it, in a Styrofoam post-pack) and I will most likely be at 85 Miskin (sorry, it's Brents, the institution) by 6.30pm. I'm on the plane in 11 hours, and once the business is out of the way, I'm looking forward to meeting you and sharing a vino or twelve.
I was at my local Grand Cru tasting group tonight (you may have seen notes of previous tastings) and one of the GC tasting group is also coming to Brisbane tomorrow (and leaving 90 minutes after me from Perth). Unfortunately, she's only on the ground for one day, otherwise we could have had another WA representative (and she knows her stuff). When I told her about this event, she was not pleased she couldn't stay, and I will of course be reporting on our event through tasting notes and a write up - which I hope you will all help me with.
See you Friday
Allan

Re: Its Winter - Brisbane Offline - July
Sorry for the delay readers. I was not as far along the road to recovery from illness as I thought I was and Friday night set me back a tad!
A fantastic night with some real treats. The food was uniformly superb, and the service was so good that when we realised we had left less than $100 tip, we had another whip round! There were motions put that we simply have all our offlines at 85 Miskin Street (the artist formerly known as Brent's)
We had two bottles of the 2008 Majella Sparkling Shiraz while we got our act together. In my view an improvement on the 2007, this had good fruit, great balance and a pleasantly persistent finish. Slightly coarse bubbles, but that’s quibbling. A Very Good start!
Flight 1
2002 Grossett Polish Hill Riesling. Lemon pith, lanolin, green apple and nashi pear. All about the texture (which is lovely!). Some said this was in a dumb phase, but it really just needed food to express itself. Very Good.
2014 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc. A lot of people passed on this (a transition from ABC to ABS by the cognoscenti?). Not your fruity acid smear, this had structure with the nettles, split pea and surprising gooseberry. Not my cup of tea, but a change of pace. Good
Flight 2
2002 Toolangi Reserve Chardonnay. On the nose, distinct butterscotch and crème brulee, but without a hint of sweetness (if that makes sense). Gorgeous texture, with what fruit is left in the background, but very long and interesting. Set some of this aside and came back to it once or twice. Would have liked to have seen this in it’s heyday, but I reckon that was 3-5 years ago. Very, Very Good and my WWOTN.
2007 Voyager Estate Chardonnay. This was in a good space. Lean, but with good fruit. Good acid, with a fair bot of interest, nuttiness. Not sure where it will go from here. Very Good.
Flight 3
2007 Gevery Chambertin. Some ‘barnyard’ on the nose that blew off pretty quickly. After 10 minutes in the glass this came together nicely. Set some of this aside and came back to it again and again over the evening. Developed complexity and length. Nick said 2007 was a warm year, which I don’t recall, but he might have meant in France. This fell over towards the end of the night. Very Good,
2005 Giaconda Pinot Noir. Not sure whether 05 was a warm year (it’s always pretty warm in Brisbane). This was much fruitier, with cherry pastilles and liquorice on the nose with more of the same on the palate. Nice enough flavours but the consensus of the group was “shortâ€Â. Good, almost Very Good.
We then had a structured tasting of the 2012 Ballycroft releases. I will leave these to others to describe as these proved not to be my cup of tea. I normally like warm cuddly wines, but I found these a little OTT across the board. Might have been because I was crook as I struggled with a lot of the heavier wines tonight.
Flight 4
2004 Voyager Estate Cabernet Merlot. Nick called the wood on this. “Shedload of cedar†(although he didn’t use the word shed). This was popped and poured and to me proved enigmatic. Started out okay, but then the tannins overwhelmed the fruit for a bit and then it came good. I think everyone including some of the people at the next table asked Alan if it had been decanted (you had to be there!). Very Good.
2005 Marqués de Riscal Baron de Chirel Reserva Rioja. Surprisingly mild nose though Rens did say he had decanted it for 3 hours before putting it back in the bottle to bring along. It was surprising because the palate was so full and intense. Beautiful cherry, cola and tomato leaf. I wrote gorgeous. Balance. Again, I came back to this one across the course of the evening as it evolved. Very, Very Good verging on Excellent.
2002 Classic McLaren ‘La Testa’ Cabernet Sauvignon. Big, bold and enjoyable. Right at the threshold of my alcohol heat tolerance on the evening. Loads of fruit tannin and acid all in balance with just a question mark on the alcohol. Very, Very Good.
Flight 5
2002 Greenock Creek Cornerstone Grenache. Started out too confected and OTT for me but settled pretty quickly in the glass. Dark sweet cherry and raspberry, without the sweet finish. Good length. Interesting and rated as Excellent.
1998 Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz. Caught in the trap of bringing this myself, I thought this was Excellent. Complex nose with floral elements and attractive oak. Great fruit somewhere between medium and full-bodied. Length to burn. Not sure how much of my appreciation came from the contrast with the wines around it. My RWOTN and WOTN.
2001 Greenock Creek Creek Block Shiraz. Not sure I want to say too much as this seemed like wine concentrate to me. Massive, but without much of a nose it sat on the palate, heavy, but lacking vibrancy. I was thinking about this and the following wine the next day, and maybe it was the lack of acid? Anyway, didn’t rock my boat on the night. Couldn't rate this. NR
2002 Torbreck Run Rig Shiraz. A potent (threatening?) nose with something I couldn’t quite put my finger on (putty?). Again, huge on the tongue but doesn’t seem to move across the palate. Perhaps on another night this would wow me (as it clearly did others), but not tonight. NR.
Cheese
Gerry had brought along a Maxwell Vintage Port for the cheese which was a great way to finish the night.
Another fantastic Brisbane offline. (I'll post the votes in a separate post).
Thanks to Gerry for organising and moving the date even though he was flying out the next day. Thanks to Alan for coming from WA for the event. Thanks to everyone for the generosity of their contributions - it is remarkable the things people bring. The company and banter was great! I came under sustained attack for the quality of the glassware at the previous offline, which I organised but then failed to attend (First World Problems). I didn’t get a chance to mention Chelsea’s loss to the New York Red Bulls, sorry Nick. Great to catch up with everyone again and looking forward to the next one already
