Killerby Chardonnay 2013

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day

Killerby has been a relative favourite of mine since the early 2000s. A change of ownership meant the closure of my favourite Bunbury cellar door, but the grapes for the Chardonnay have always (as far as I know) come from Margaret River vineyards.

A very youthful pale yellow colour. The nose is dominated by oak at this point, but there's some fairly smart fruit underneath, in the citrus / grapefruit range. There's also a hint of cashew and some savoury, mealy characters.

The palate is complex - oak, acid, citrus (inc nectarine), and savoury, all meshing. Again the cedary oak and tannins dominate at this point but will presumably soften in a year or so, and come into balance.

This is not as immediately appealing as the 2011 and 2012 were, but a good wine nonetheless.

Cheers

Re-tasted for the first time since the 2015 TN.

Colour is now yellow bordering on gold. The oak domination previously noted has diminished, and the developed savoury characters are now to the fore, with the citrus fruit present but not featured.

The palate has a slight buttery mouthfeel, along with a little tannic grip. The complexity noted previously remains - there's lots of elements to the palate, and its not easy to separate them out.

Still not sure about this one. It could improve over the next year or so.
