Tasting Note No.48
TORB brought this along for our third Club dinner in 2004. (Full details on this event by Adair soon) God bless the (red)man. It was truly a fantastic moment and wine. Guest DavidL almost guessed it's identity and vintage right to the point, so the crown goes to him. The wine was matured in large oak casks for 16 months then it spent more than 8 years in bottle on yeast lees. Winemaker Ian McKenzie is a legend for creating such a great wine and Aussie Icon.
Colour still dark red, no sign of tiredness or browning whatsoever. Vigorous and tiny bubbles in the best Champagne traddition. Powerful Shiraz aromatics on the nose, black cherry, mulberries, liquorice. Seamless and extremely concentrated palate packed with rich fruit flavours. Beautiful balance and serious underlying POWER. At 17 years of age it's nowhere near full maturity. Needs an other 4-6 years to fully blossom but will last well beyond that. Amazing gamey flavours, very dark and rich. A joy to drink and savour. In a way it can compete with any product from Champagne. Superb and superior. It cost AU $60 today but it is a bargain, it doesn't matter which way you look at it. I've never seen it on a bottle shop shelf, my only hope is Ric who'll (hopefully) bring me a bottle when he comes to our next club dinner in late november. A stunning and superb Australian classic that worth it's weight in gold.

You are out of luck pal, that was my last bottle of 1987 but it was stunning! I am sure I can find some other FRS that you will enjoy at the November event.
