Transporting glasses

Post by maybs »

Hey all

I'm interested to know how people are transporting glassware to offlines or wherever. I have seen a few set ups people have at offlines and done a quick online search but am curious as to what the full range of options are and, importantly, people's experiences with them.

Cheers
Scott

Options:

1. Bring them in the box you bought them in
2. Some sort of poster tube, cut down to size
3. Put a foam insert inside a small, narrow brief case
4. Wrap in a tea towel (and treat it like any other bottle of wine) in a carry bag

I've never had any breakages yet. Only trouble is when you may want to kick on after the tasting and you're lugging your wine glasses around
I was waiting for a moment, but that moment never came

Riedel makes one...it CAN fit 4 Zalto Universals..but it is tight....Ravenscroft has a copy of it which is probably just as good...Downside - takes awhile to get rid of the plastic smell..although it is almost gone on mine...

Wine Check is coming out with one that is like the Riedel one but thicker nylon..Should be cheaper and stronger from the looks of it...

TiggerK has those wine bottle cases that fit 2 zaltos..those are hard cases so look pretty solid as far as carrying them around...
A lot of guys are using the wine box it came in but that can be a pain.
Some people have the single boxes they came in which are a bit easier to transport around.
Seen a Champagne bottle box being used and that seems to work out very well.
Seen a shoe box being used that that seems to work out very well.
If you can find a cylinder to fit them in like what some of the mid tier Riedels come in (which are too small) that would probably work.
I thought about getting a suitcase like box with wheels (they sell them as luggage) that can hold bottles and glasses...since I ended up getting a wine check for travel (which I still might change) I didn't go with this....although Wine Check is coming out with a 6 bottle thicker luggage like bag and the glasses case fits on it perfectly...but I was thinking more along the lines of the Pelican stuff...

I'm trying to figure out a way to transport Zalto Burgs..but they're just too damn big....they can fit in my bag but it is bulging out and all it would take is a slight bump and *PoP*.

Yeah, I got mine from Myer in Pitt St, think they're still available, fit two Zalto Universals perfectly, and quite solid. Cost of a Zalto though, but worth it.

If someone can find a similar case to fit the Zalto Burg's, I'm in like Errol. But they're just too darn big, so if I really want to (i.e a Burgundy night), into a box with much tissue and then into a pizza/food style carry bag, carried with much care.

I use the Riedel cases, and also have some Champagne glasses that came in solid metal tins. They work well

Yeah I was thinking of just going with a Riedels case but then I wondered if I really need to take 4 glasses many places. I actually meant to ask you where you go yours Tim as the idea of marching cases, one for 2 glasses and one for bottles appeals. Must is just down the road so might take a squiz and think about it a bit more.

Had a look re wine check Kevin and could only find their luggage case. As per usual you seem to be the man with the inside knowledge :D

Another benefit of successfully finding a case for the Zalto Burg glasses is they can double as an emergency decanter. They swallow a whole bottle with space to spare and plenty of surface area!! :D

Wonder if a custom leather/faux leather case might be an option, maybe a modified hat bag etc..... maybe some creativity required..

Still thinking a scientific instrument case would be tough as nails, with foam inserts sized perfectly for Zaltos (maybe replacable inset for Burgs!). :) Need to get on to that some day!

More realistically I second the hard black wine bottle case solution TiggerK uses, went out and got one myself. Perfect for offlines although for tastings with 4 glass flights I still bring the box (double boxed, since the zalto box itself is flimsy).

Love the Torb case...was looking for one just like it out there but tough to find. I did find one thing similar but not sure the cutouts would work..

Oh...I was going to add this as well...

You can get a gun pistol case and they work fantastically well for a larger variety of glasses...They're cheap to..well in the US they're cheap.

Bought this from Wal-Mart -
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Plano-Protect ... e/16662942

I've seen it on ebay for 60 something...

Be warned, they are bigger than they look...Some of the guys on Beserkers use it...I didn't have a chance to try it as I literally picked it up (and left in the US) on the way to the airport but looks like it would work well and it is wide enough to probably fit a Zalto Burg...

Pistol case is a good idea, I was thinking the same thing about pelican camera cases, but they can get a bit expensive. However, I am not sure I want to look like I am taking a gun to a wine fight :P

Ended up going with 2 x the same type of wine carrier Tim has (sorry for ripping off your look Tim!). I like the solid case, it looks smart enough and I figure I can use 1 for glasses and 1 for wine, or if I need 4 glasses I can use them both for glasses and take the wine in another carry bag, so should sort out all my needs.

It's a shame there are not more customisable cases made specifically for wine glasses on the market.

Those check in wine carriers look bad arse haha, I almost want to buy one even though I don't really travel with wine!

If you are just interested in carrying a single glass, a lens case could be a very good option. These are used by photographers for carrying telephoto lenses. They have thick foam padding inside and often a neoprene or nylon exterior. For example, for a Zalto Universal, something like this one probably would fit. There is lots of choice, with some research you should find a case that fits your glass perfectly.

Nice tip Jim, thanks! Will investigate...
