Best's Riesling 2013

Post by Waiters Friend »

I've been a fan of Great Western shiraz for some time, but have only recently started on the Rieslings. Mostly Seppelt, and today is my first try of the Best's. 11.5% abv

Pale yellow in colour. A shy nose initially, with lemon, lemon or orange blossom, talc and some minerality. This flows through the palate, where good clean acid combined with the citrus and the minerality to provide a refreshing yet dry mouthfeel.

Presently, it is a very lean wine, and you could be fooled into thinking there is not a lot here if served too cold. You'd be wrong - all the elements are here for a wine that should fill out a little with age (and it should age well for at least 7 years). The palate and the finish are particularly satisfying right now, and the slate / mineral aspects are very much like some higher Eden Valley or even Austrian Rieslings.

Cheers
Allan

The 2011 was particularly good as well. Not a bad Riesling by any means.

I recall the 2011 got a lot of praise and I still have a few bottles in the cellar... anyone tried one lately?

Fwiw the bests 2010, 12, 13 and 14 were a cut above most of the rest at the recent international Riesling challenge in Canberra. Although not brilliant wines if you saw them on a list you'd be happy that you chose them. On the up for sure...

Cheers

I have one '11 and one '12 - I'll check in on the '11 in 4-5 years time and use that to gauge the '12.

I haven't seen Best's Rieslings over here for quite some time but, just to let you know, a '98 that I opened somewhere around 2010 was lovely. In fact, at near about the same time, a friend of mine reported that he too enjoyed an equally aged Best's rieling. He mentioned it by way of discussing how sometimes the more modest wines, properly aged, can be more memorable than the younger, bigger, more prestigeous wines.

Cheers...............................Mahmoud.

$90 for a 3pk of the reilsing at $30/btl delivered.
When I first tasted the 2011 I wasn't sure what to make of it with its depth of mouth-filling varietal fruit and apparent sweetness which was deceptively underscored by citrus that appeared on the back palate and led to a satisfyingly dry finish.
