2010 Vintage Suggestions

Post by Redav »

Recently I've been doing some thinking about 'cellaring' some 2010 vintages for numerically# significant anniversary years. Here's a list of what I have and what I think I'd like;

5 - Tyrrell's 4 Acres Shiraz (2009 because there is no 2010 and I already have some 09' so I'm kinda cheating here but I know the misses loves this wine)
10 - Rockford Basket Pressed Shiraz (I managed to get a 2010 last year)
15 - Peter Lehmman Stonewell Shiraz / Brokenwood Graveyard Shiraz (2009 again because I don't think a '10 was produced?)
20 - Penfolds St Henri Shiraz
25 - Henschke Mt Edelstone Shiraz

The ones in bold are the ones I'd like some suggestions for as the Henschke and Penfolds probably isn't realistic and I've not had a Brokenwood so I wouldn't know what to expect there. There's a bit of a Shiraz trend there but I'm happy with Cab Sav's too. I'm yet to try Wynns so wondering if they have something I should consider? I'd probably like to have something that's semi-iconic for a region and progressively 'ramping up' over the years but I'm also trying to take my blinkers off.

# because all years are equally important :)

Hi Redav,

A few more good 2010 wines to consider that should have great cellaring potential:
- 2010 Peter Lehmann Shiraz Stonewell
- 2010 Penfolds Bin 389
- 2010 Houghton Cabernet Sauvignon Gladstones

Apart from the Stonewell these were released a while back so may be hard to get hold of...

Cheers

The 2010 Wynn John Riddoch was supposed to be a belter.

Does your wife like Tyrrells Old Patch? Pretty good in 2010 although I prefer 4 Acres as well...
Bests Thomson Family 2010 should be great
Bordeaux/Burgundy?

I have been meaning to try some more Lehmann's. I think we've only had their Future's Shiraz so far and my father-in-law is a bit of a fan.

Yeah, I think the 389 dried up pretty quick? I realise I'm trying to shut the gate after the horse has bolted :(

We've not tried any yet but I'd like to rectify that.

Good point, we're yet to try much in the way of a French drop. Fingers crossed we visit Bordeaux this time next year. Open to suggestions on that front too.

Bests Thompson Family is sensational. Langi very good too in 2010 (but my, hasn't the price jumped...).

Some great suggestions from WA...maybe add Juniper Estate Cabernet in too.

Oh, and Barolo should be a happy hunting ground...

2010 was a pretty good vintage in most places. I bought quite a few Coonawarra cabs. A lot of are still available too, judging by what was on display at the Coonawarra roadshow back in August.
On top of the Wynns that has already been mentioned I'd consider Balnaves (both the standard Cab Sauv and the Tally), Petaluma, Penley Reserve and Majella.

You shouldn't have too much trouble finding 2010 389 if you want some, now or later at auction, and it comes with a pretty bulletproof track record on cellarability.

Agree with Simon on Barolo - 2010 touted as a great vintage and would be long term. Can be punishing on the wallet though, be best to see if it might be your thing before committing too much money to it.

Plenty of good suggestions above for Aus wines from 2010 - also consider Woodland's top Cabernet, for shiraz maybe St Peters, Mt Edelstone.

I haven't had one yet, but I don't think I'd drink a 2009 4 Acres at 5 -6 years old (unless you have plenty more in the cellar) as it sounds like a longer term wine. My approach would be to drink some other 2010 that would be closer to it's peak at 5 years old (maybe a good Victorian Pinot?) and save the 4 Acres for later. But you've tried it, so would have a better idea than me.

At the end of your window - 30 Years is a stretch for most wines (though screwcaps should make it easier for some more). You'd have to think 2010 Grange will be a lock if stored properly. Old St Henri would do it in top years (I had an '86 last month in fine form). 2010 JR should do it, and some top WA Cab perhaps. Wendouree? The right Bordeaux 2010 would be long term, sorry I don't have the personal experience to make suggestions here.

2010 Peter Lehmann Mentor is a great, great cabernet, and will peak at 15 years, i think. Superb value.
If you want to buy Grange, think about Montrose 2010, it is half the price in Australia, and in 30 years will be as good or better than Grange, I suspect.

Not doubting cabernet dominant Montrose's pedigree but it is hardly comparable to shiraz dominant Grange now, is it?

Btw, in a parallel life, do you go by the name of Falls?

I agree and according to Tyrrell's vintage chart, it would still be young. It's just that the three that I have, have been stored in less than idea conditions - at the bottom of the pantry in a Brisbane townhouse. So it's as much a reason to see what they're like as it is drinking something we acquired on a Hunter shortly after our wedding.

Yes, I realise. I too would hope that a good Grange might go the distance but that hope isn't based on any real knowledge or experience which is why I've put the question out there.

Mt Edelstone. They seem to cellar incredibly well.

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?

Sounds like a good plan. Always nice to drink a wine with personal history attached on your anniversary.

I realise that it won't quite be an apples to apples comparison but any chance it's okay to say that this is to Hill of Grace as what St Henri is to Grange? I have wondered what this wine is like (but I hadn't thought about it for this purpose, good idea) as we're big fans of the Keyneton Euphonium.

For my palate, that comparison would do ME a disservice, and I love St Henri. I think ME is as good or better than HOG in almost 50% of vintages.

Okay, thanks Mike. I think I'll stick it as a joint option for the 20 year but realistically, affordability might determine that if I get one of each maybe I'll leave them for the 25 / 30 (assuming they'll keep for that length, if not maybe I'll pull them back a milestone?).

Thanks team. I've amended the list for the time being and picked up a Mount Edelstone last night which is pretty good for an indecisive bloke like me :D The Graveyard and Stonewell are easy purchases (and I'm still unsure which to get / keep) but I reckon that St Henri might be a little elusive. There's also some good suggestions in there that I'll try and sample as soon as I can so thanks for those. Looking forward to trying a Wynns and a few others in between :)

Two of the better wines I tried at the Langtons tasting (that didn't cost a gazillion dollars) were:
2010 Yalumba Cabernet Shiraz
2010 Henscke Kyneton Euphonium

Note to self. Meant to get some!

Do it. We loved the '08 (stashed 6 away) and liked the '10 but only stashed 3 (due to storage and cash flow constraints :( )

Seriously, there is a lot of very good to excellent 2010 Coonawarra Cab. Katnook, Balnaves, Bowen, Wynns, Leconfield, Majella, the list goes on.

+1. It was the best 2010 vintage wine that I've ever tasted and one of the best wines that I've ever had.

Are there many Wynns / Lehmman wines in the $20 - $45 range that are particularly worth a look at (I'm thinking drink now / short term keepers, not for the anniversary idea)?

2012 Wynns 'Black Label' Cab Sav readily available under $30 (although I've seen some stores put the price up after all the good reviews so shop around) and 2012 Wynns 'The Siding' Cab Sav readily available around $15. Both drinking nicely now, but you can easily cellar for up to 10 years, probably 15+ years for the Black Label.
