What should I get?

Hi All,
As per the subject 'what should I get?', i am seeking for some advise or direction where should i be looking or keeping my eyes on for my next moves.
In recent weeks i have had some i really love & enjoy and some not as much.
love & enjoy;
Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir 08
Docteur Peste Corton Grand Cru 08

not as much;
Heemskerk Pinot Noir 09
Paringa Peninsula Pinot Noir 12
Lupe Cholet Gevrey Chambertin 02

These are some of them currently in my fridge (i hope i will love & enjoy these);
Felton Road Pinot Noir 13
Carrick Pinot Noir 09
St Huberts Yarra Valley 12
Ata Rangi 10
Farr Rising 12
Yabby Lake 13

I notice the colour of those ones i prefer is generally a lighter/pale pinot noir, apology if the terminology is not exactly correct.
I would like to know if anyone would be able to give some advise or direction to which wineries/area i should be going for based on what i love & enjoy.

Hi PNo,

If you like the lighter end of things, I'd have a look at some Pinots from the Upper Yarra or higher up in Mornington. A few off the top of my head:

Wanderer Upper Yarra (a real favourite of mine)
Giant Steps (I usually prefer Applejack)
Oakridge Local Vineyard Series (Swallowfield is lovely in 12)
Maybe Timo Mayer

Ten Minutes by Tractor (Mornington)
Eldridge Estate

In addition, Moondarra Conception 2010 is a brilliant wine...but you may not find any for sale.

My taste appears pretty similar to yours, so hopefully this helps a bit.

I'd suggest Geelong and Gippsland if you like a lighter AU Pinot...

They'll tend to be lighter in color, lighter weight and higher in acid than most of the other regions...

Hi PNo, it all depends on the wine... I have recently been enjoying '10's from Eldridge / 10 Minutes and Moondarra, which are all looking lovely (as they have done since purchase). I find some of the others benefit from a bit more time, especially the Mayers. Not into the '12's yet, but will probably give a couple a go over the next few months. Stock up on the '12's and '13's... Oh, and I forgot Hurley...which age particularly well.

You could try a few good Tamar Valley and the Freycinet Peninsula wines.

You could try the full (non-estate) versions of Josef Chromy and Moore's Hill to start.

Freycinet and Bay of Fires are excellent but they may need a few years in the cellar to settle, especially 2012s.

If you prefer lighter-bodied pinot you may not enjoy the St Hubert's 2012 as much as I have. A consistently praised pinot but which I've not tried is Hoddle's Creek for ~$20.

The 2012 Ten Minutes by Tractor Estate Pinot Noir is phenomenal, but you may have to work a bit to find some.

Since we're talking Pinot Noir here it seems as a good a place as any to ask about deBartoli's Yarra Valley Pinot Noir. The reason I ask is because I came across a couple of bottles of the 2006 vintage and was womndering if it's worth a punt - at the very least it should be relatively mature with eight years under it's belt. Of course there is the usual caveat regarding it having been on the shelf for a considerable time.

The Yarra is cool climate and is considered a good place for Pinots - isn't that where Coldstream Hills is located, and why no recommendations, have they fallen out of grace?

Hi Sean,

Sorry for not getting back to you. Yes, I was talking about De Bortoli's Estate Grown Pinot from the Yarra Vally. I've not had this before, and probably none of their pinots before, so it's nice to get the reassurance about the producer's pinot and the vintage. I really like older wines that are well into "tertiary territory" so, as you say, storage is the key factor here. I will therefore pick up a bottle as it is on sale and should be owrth a try.

I don't think there is any of the St Hubert, Diamond Valley, or Yerring Station Pinots here so this, the de Bortoli, and Coldstream Hills may be the only Yarra Valley ambassadors of Pinot there is in the local market.

I'd take a punt on the '06 De Bortoli Pinot if it was fairly priced, like Sean said '06 was good.

Not really related, but I had their '06 Estate Chardonnay a couple of weeks ago and it was drinking beautifully, but was fully mature.

I think it was overpriced to begin with - can't quite recall what - but on sale it was just under $27 - not unfair I guess for a back vintage that might be drinking well. And I suppose it being under screwcap is a bit of added insurance.
