Tried in-store once. Flat, dead fruit, not really impressed. Given the good press it's been getting, I can only suppose that it was a bad bottle. Also tried the 01 Devil's Lair at the same time - very very nice wine.

Agreed, very ripe and full, nohting subtle or even varietal about this for me either, although the style will have its fans. I ask myself why would you make a wine like this from Coonawarra cabernet? Much much much prefer the St Hugo style of Cabernet fron Orlando,

I have to say I disagree with you guys - to me it's one of the best wines I've tried this year.

My tasting note from the Orlando latest releases a few months ago:

1998 Orlando Jacaranda Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Dark, inky crimson red. The bouquet is on another level compared to all these wines, a magnificently textured and complex masterpiece; there’s many layers of fruit and oak that constantly lift to reveal espresso, chocolate, peaty earth, tar, chalk, dried herbs, red berries and spices. The palate is more condensed in comparison, with earthy blackcurrant/blackberry fruit, and a big, powdery tannin structure that slowly builds in the mouth, leaving a sweet cassis and licorice finish. Easily the wine of the tasting, and a classic that will reward with 10+ years in a good cellar – wait for it!

I'm with Ian - I had this at CD a couple of weeks ago. Top wine for mine. I bought it, despite the fact I am buying less and less Coonawarra cabernet these days ...

I prefer 98 St Hugo. I would wait for the 99 Jac.

tried it and to be honest it reminded me very much of the 98 coleraine. quite fine, packed with tight fruit. not as monumental as the 96, but maybe a bit more refined??

it needs time to open up id say, nice fine wine...not a star yet but i think it has potential to be one. was great the next day, the air seemed to open up some complexity.

mind you saw some 98 coleraine on the shelf at $55 the other day...now thats tempting!!

Interestingly enough I got to try the 98 Coleraine a few weeks ago. I saw it as quite different to the Jac, much more refined as you say. and at that money I'd buy the Coleraine any day!

yeah coleraine is the class wine though the jacaranda is cheaper
