So, it looks like I will be attending a BYO function where the cost of admission is one bottle of Grange. I anticipate we will end up with about 10-12 attendees and it should be interesting, since I have never tasted a drop of the stuff in my life!
Anyhow, I am kind of organising it and one of the other attendees has said that I can nominate which bottle he brings. He says he has a complete vertical from 1972 to 2009

I will be taking a 2004, as it is one of the few I own

I am not sure yet what anyone else is planning on bringing but what do you guys think you would pick if you had your choice and quality, rather than sentiment ('79 was my birth year) was the defining factor?
A quick look at Cellartracker suggests that some stand out vintages in the last 30 years have been '74, '82, '86 and '98, with the '74 probably a bit past its peak, the '82 nudging the edges and the '86 in a really good place right now. Sounds like the '98 is very good but still too young.
So, my preliminary thoughts are the '86 but I am interested to hear if I am missing something. Great chance to unashamedly raid someone else's cellar.
