Last nights wine dinner.

Some hilights from a multi variety dinner:

Mitchelton Blackwood Park Riesling '95.
Clolour of rich yellow/gold with only a light "kero" on the nose witha honey richness. The honeyed tones cary through to the palate with still some acid and deep orange/citrus flavours. Lovely wine with some years yet to improve.

Dromana Estate Reserve Chardonnay '99.
Colour of yellow/green, still and oak dominanat nose (but good oak) with fig/melon notes. The fig/melon goes through to the palate, as does a wonderfull slipperry mouthfeel. Oily and rich and rounded with some acid there, some of the oak. This wine has perhaps another three years before it reaches it's best.

Mount Pleasant "Elizabeth" Semillon '96.
Colour of rich yellow with a honeyed toasty nose. Strong lemon citrus palate with honeyed notes. Quite a bit if acidity still and some dryness. Not bad, but a little short on the finish.

Seppelt Show Reserve Sparkling Shiraz '91.
Deep garnet colour with typical barnyadry feral nose with liquorice. A rich earthy palate good mousse and good length. Typiacl Great Western shiraz.

Main Ridge 1/2 Acre Pinot Noir '00.
Colour of purple/red with a forest floor, sweet red berry nose. The palatewas unforced sweet fruits with some feral or mushroom nuances thrown in for good measure. Lovely silky mouthfeel, good length and persistance. Still good acidity to ensure some years yet in improvement. Lovely wine.

Wynns Black Label Cab/Sauv '90.
Powerfull rich fruit and cedar/cigar box on the nose follows through to the still powerfull rich fruit on the palate. Secondary characteristics are really only catching up with the fruit, this is a glorious wine for the price and drinking magnificantly.

Wynns Black Label Cab/Sauv '91.
What a great comparison. This wine is far more varietally correct than the '90, is far more elegant, yet still powerfull, and will undoubtably live longer than the '90. Whereas the '90 is all power fruit, this screams varietal class. Wonderfull wine!

Saltram No.1 Barossa Shiraz '96.
Deep purple ("...in rock".. well that'll show my age), inky dark middle in the glass, liquorice, chocolate and sweet vanilla on the nose. Sweet chocolate, vanilla and dark plums on the palate with drying but sweet chewy tannins, lovely long sweet finish. Close to it's best. Very good.

Fox Creek Reserve Shiraz '96.
The second bottle opened after the corked one, this wine is sheer hedonism. Rich, sweet powerfull nose of dark fruits hits the palate with a whollop. Not alcohol whollop, but sheer richness and power. Stopped the dinner in it's tracks with wonderment. Made by "Sparky" Marquis in a show style it is every bit a show pony. Monstrous length, wouldn't go away. Exceptional typical '90's McLaren Vale Shiraz.

The Seppelt's Show Reserve showed well by your account?

There has been some recent controversy here about that wine.

I must add, your note reminds me of my impression of the wine a few years back.

These are serious wines Rory and my thunder has been stolen for our next offline post-Antman.
1990 the year of the Maggots. Yet in Burgundy, Bordeaux, SE Australia and Margaret River viticulture was kind. How good is Wynns?

Mike the '91 is widely regarded as "brett city".

No Mike, it's the 91 Show Sparkling copping all the flak (supposedly brett). I haven't found the character off-putting in the 2 I've tried.

Not just those areas. 1990 was also very good in Italy, California, Rhone - it seems to be the leading candidate for 'Worldwide Vintage of the 20th Century"
