TN: 1998 Wild Duck Creek Springflat Shiraz

Post by Alan Rath »

Dark and dense, still youthfull and vibrant, huge flavors of blackberry and dark cherry, with hints of anise, pepper, tar and vanilla, perfectly balancing tannins, and a long, savory finish. 93/100.

The 98 version is, I believe, a bit better than the 2001 I tasted last year - which is a bit higher-toned, sweeter, not quite as balanced.

With recent discussions on Tanzer's Australian comments, and much speculation that the 98 vintage produced early drinkers that may not hold up well over time, this was a great counterpoint to both. It is indeed a big wine, ripe, concentrated, and powerful, but suits my tastes perfectly (especially for the pairing with grilled tri-tip) :D

Regards,
Alan
