Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 01-Worth The Money?

Post by JamieBahrain »

$85 at Cellar Door.

Debating how far I can push the marriage-Wendouree, Kay's, Eurocave and other recent orders.

Is this lauded vintage a must for the cellar?

Well..... think about it. Good wine from a good vintage - completely different to Wendouree and Kays in style, so do you like the style ? (what is the relevance of Eurocave apart from lack of money to spend on wine ?)

Do you have plenty of previous Moss Wood vintages ? Do you have the money ? Only you can answer and decide. The wine will be good, so really it is up to you.

Thanks Chris.

What I was hinting at is that it is that time of the year where we seem to be overwhelmed by must buy mailouts. Not a money issue but a marital one- I'm sure I am not alone here. Putting some domestic purchases off for wine purchases :D .

Yes I do have Moss Wood in my possession. And a few of the vintages, 93 comes to mind, I would be mighty peeved off at paying $85 dollars for.

I don't get to see the wine locally ( Hong Kong ) for a few months, if at all, the locals quite vintage savvy. Plenty of 2000 lying around incidentally.

So what I was after was some impressions or scuttlebutt as to how good the Moss Wood 2001 C/S is. Tyranny of distance forces me to rely on the forum for many purchases.

And in my current circumstances, a little ranting and raving about the 01 Moss Wood neccessary for it's purchase.

It hasn't been released yet Jamie, so you wouldn't see too many reviews as yet. It showed pretty well in the Divine Cabernet tasting when I had it a little while ago however. It's a good vintage so you have to decide whether to buy that or some new shoes I guess. :?

It's been released on the internet via the very contemporary Moss Wood web page.

$85 per bottle and $228 for the magnum. In stelvin or cork!

Have been monitoring the release for a few weeks and surprised by the lack of fan fare-hence my post.

Similar with Cullens last year. Quiet for a few weeks, then the rush and it was all gone.

If its not available retail yet, it will be within the week. My local said yesterday that stocks were overdue.

Is it worth it? Witout answering the question, I see it as akin to buying 03 Bordeaux en primeur - reputation says you should, pedigree says you should, vintage is highly regarded, price is equivalent to some 4ths 5ths and good cru burgeois, and without wanting to start another Aus vs France bunfight about style difference, I'd expect quality to be empirically similar.

I'm getting some. To go with my Cullens and Devils Lairs. And Heytesbury when it gets here. And Voyager. And Jack Mann. And Gladstones.

cheers

Andrew

Jamie,
I went large on it. Tasted in barrel in 03. It was very good.
Mattinson gave it 97 points recently. You can probably trust him. :D
Is it twice as good as the exceptional 01 Devils Lair though? Law of diminishing returns as with many wines.

Wizz-eye
Had the 01 Heytesbury last night. Will do a TN shortly.

Thanks for the scuttlebutt gentleman.

The winery notes suggest this maybe the best MW ever!

Cullens declared similar last year. By the time the reviews came in to confirm the wineries claim, the DM 01 long gone.

Will go hunting for Campbell's note.

Jamie,
this is from the freely available Moss Wood Newsletter.
My apologies to anyone I offend by putting this up.

Campbell Mattinson:
www.winefrontmonthly.com.au
April 2004
Moss Wood Margaret River Cabernet
Sauvignon 2001: Reserved, young, raw,
primary, somewhat closed and yet still
managing to drive a clear wedge of class
between it and the bulk of its competition.
Fruit of ultimate, coiled purity, yet suggestive
of complexity even in its extreme youth. Taut
through its centre, yet even so its ripe,
velvety, blackcurranty fruit is obvious. In
many ways, the perfect, varietal, young
cabernet. Drink: 2010-2026. 97 points.

Ray Jordan:
The magnificent dozen - West
Australia Fresh - 6 May 04
Which wines couldnÂ’t you live without? We
choose our ‘desert-island’ survival pack......
...IÂ’d also have to have a Moss Wood cabernet
sauvignon. No dozen would be complete
without this quintessential small vineyard
cabernet. Soft, generous and multi-layered, it
continues to produce a style that is distinctly
Moss Wood.

Jeremy Oliver:
www.onwine.com.au
Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon
2001- 17/12/2003
Alluringly deep, complex perfume of pristine
small dark berries, mulberries and
redcurrants, scented with violets, perfectly
integrated cedar/mocha oak and a dusty
suggestion of dark olives. Sumptuous, silky
palate whose deep core of intense small dark
berry flavour is lavishly coated with
chocolate/vanilla/cedar oak and bound by
supremely fine, satiny tannins. Suggestions
of tar and prune reveal some slightly riper
fruit, while its structure, power and
integration stamp it as a significant wine,
perhaps the finest Moss Wood ever. 19.3,
drink 2013-2021+.

Thanks Gavin.

Order on the way!

Gut feeling is I would regret not getting any of this wine.

I have some 01 Howard park in the cellar, and will probably add a bottle or two of this also.

The Mosswood has just become available locally along with the 2002 Cullen, so far have only purchased the Cullen in stelvin. Will probably buy the Mosswood as well.

Ron.

mosswood cabernet 2001

Post by ACG »

I had it as part of a vertical spanning 98 -02 (barrel samples for the last one or two) early last yr, suffice to say that it is as good as it should be and if you like that rich, seamless, classic moss wood cabernet style (im a huge fan) then go for your life. It is not dissimilar to the 99 in style and imo that is one sensational expression of MR cabernet. Go on, buy it!
