TN: Arakoon Lighthouse Cabernet 2002

Post by Wizz »

Opened by mistake: I reached into a shelf I thought was all GSM and hared of to a local restaurant, only to find we had a cabernet instead :-(

Purple red. Dusty, coffee grounds, cassis and mint - what ho, varietally correct cab from McLaren Vale! Nice ripe tannins take this wine from mid palate to finish. This is very full bodied, and was still showing as inky, dense and rich three days later. A touch of warmth from the 14.5% alcohol. A big step up from the 01, and a great surprise. I reckon this will take a few years cellaring before its at its best. Good drinking at $18

Bottled under Screwcap.

Cheers

That does sound like a good price for a decent wine. Did you buy it in Brissy?

As you know I had my doubts about the 01 Doyen on a personal basis, but the '02 Arakoons across the board are very very good indeed.

Well worth a try for those of you who have not, and good value for money in the varying price brackets!

Grant,

Bought this off mail list. Patrik said he thought this needed some time to settle, I think he's right. Its a ripe warm climate cab, but gee its a nice drink.

Gavin, we tried the 01 Lighthouse a few months ago, and I was concerned then, very ripe and hot. I've had the 02 Doyen, Sellicks Beach and now the Lighthouse. They are good full bodied wines, and so far I like the lighthouse the best. While the Doyen is a bit full on for me, Patrik and Ray deserve credit, they havent oaked it to death, and it will appeal to a lot of people. I've seen a few scores of around 90 points which I think is fair.
I'll look at the Blewitt Springs shiraz shortly, I believe its at the more elegant end,
