A couple of excellent food wines

1993 Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon This wine is only now entering its lovely complex nutty, honey phase. Not quite mid yellow with shots of green. Some hints of toast and lemony nuttiness on the nose follows onto a beautiful lively fresh palate, which is long with honey and more nuts but with heaps of fresh acid cut. Only mid weight but lovely, complex and racy. Still has heaps of life in it. Excellent

2001 Clemens Hill Pinot Noir This is from a small one hectare vineyard in the Coal River Valley near Hobart, nearly opposite Andrew Hood's contract winery at Cambridge, where the wines are made. One of the best oz pinots I have drunk - a stunner. It's not a big brute of a wine trying to be a shiraz, only mid weight but what texture and silkiness.

Mid red with a nose of lovely rich dark cherries and a flick of lifted spicy vanillan oak. Gorgeous silky longggggg palate with plums, again dark cherries and other black fruits. Tannins are soft and ripe and the long palate is kept in check by nice fresh acid. More a Volnay style than a Nuits. All primary at the moment and yet I can't believe it will ever taste any better. Will last for at least 5 years but why wait. Superb. A Gold at the 2003 Tamanian Show and well deserved - no wonder halliday gave it 95!

Cheers

Makes me happy that I picked up a bottle of the Clemens Hill while I was in Tassie last year. Should have grabbed more.

Like you I have kicked myself I didn't buy more than the 3 I purchased at Richmond - at the tasting it really stood out from the pack, particularly as 2001 was a bit up and down in Tassie.
