2002 Kalleske Greenock Shiraz

Post by markg »

Not a tasting note, didn't take any notes on the night, too busy gas-bagging. Had it with a meal Tuesday night and finished the remainder Wednesday night.

What a pearler this wine is, real class, excellent wine.

Tried to order more shiraz from cellar door yesterday with no luck - SOLD OUT !! I did find one retailer in Australia with a few bottles left (only 2 bottles per customer though).

Anybody know if somebody is still selling the Grenache ? Please PM me.
Cheers

What? These two things hardly yield similar results.

Sr. Chooch wrote:I had a bottle of this tonight with completley differant results. The bottle that I had was full of winemaking flaws. The VA level was out of sight. From my guess, the fruit was picked overripe and the fermentation got stuck. Either that, or some one forgot to top up the barrels. The finish is short and tannins are green, which leads me to believe that this is form very young vines. The wine is concentrated but if the winemaking was a bit better, I think the wine would be better. Very dissapointing. I then opened a 99 Brokenwood Graveyard which was brilliant. Great ripe flavors and a finish that lasted for 90 seconds. This is what Shiraz is all about.

This cannot be a serious post - surely, if you have an HONEST opinion then you shouldn't mind signing up and expressing it.

Had this wine over dinner on Saturday (along with a heap of other wines), and all 9 of us agreed that the Kalleske was the WOTN. From memory this was the first unanimous decision. It was so good that we pulled the cork on a 2nd bottle. Another positive was that there was no bottle variation whatsoever.

As for some of the comments above, I got neglible VA from wither bottle and the length was outstanding. Perhaps others haven't been so lucky with their bottle(s). I agree the fruit is very ripe, but wouldn't go as far as saying over-ripe.

Went to a wine tasting of 2002 Sth Aust reds some weeks back and everyone kept going back to the Kalleske, wine of the day. Even at the end of the tasting after my taste buds had been through a workout, went back to the Kalleske and again and it still shone through.
Was not buying wine at the time but weakened after tasting the Kalleske.

Ron.

I'm taking the time but not getting much in the way of results. The website should be giving me info except the big main frame is blank, no matter what category (Wines, Newsletter, Order etc.) I press. Have they gone off line till they have wine to sell?? :)

Worked fine for me this morning and works fine for me now.

I don't think they have anything to sell at the moment though.

Michael, do you really think it was a serious tasting note? (Ok have a few more question marks too for added emphasis) ???

Have you looked at the average age of the vines described on the Kalleske siite?

I love the 2002 shiraz and wish I could have bought more of it. Having said that, I do think that the 2002 shiraz is off young vines, or vines that were planted some time in the 1990s anyway. Kalleske do have very old shiraz vines and from 2003 they will release an Old Vine shiraz from these vines, but the 'standard' 2002 Greenock shiraz is from the vines planted in the 1990s. Of the 2002 releases the Old Vine grenache was the wine off old vines. This is my understanding anyway.

doesn't matter a hoot to me though. I just love the wines themselves.

Just had a thought.. There is another Kalleske red doing the rounds being sold exclusively by Cellarmaster. It is NOT the Greenock shiraz that has been discussed here.

You're probably right Mark. It is technically not a "Kalleske" and Cellarmaster and have been asked to refrain from using the name. From memory its a shiraz viognier blend.

I tell you what, I certainly don't worry about looking up info about a wine I am tasting, before writing it up.
what next? checking to see if you're supposed to like or dislike a wine before giving your 'honest' opinion?

supplementary facts are nothing to do with a good tasting tasting note, which is all about what's in the glass, and the deductions you try to make from there.

I'd like to be able to hear good things about the wine appearing on these shores. I'd really like to be able to actually get some. :(

Just wanted to post this link to a TN of the Kalleske on the eRobertParker forums. Haven't seen the wine myself so I have no other comment except that I hope the $90US is not correct.

Michael wrote:A couple of tasting opinions from the parker board:

"2002 Kalleske Shiraz - This is supposed to me the new star from Grateful Palate. This group found the wine just plain faulty. The VA level is off the chart and there is a funk in the wine that goes way beyond brett. It sort of reminds me of the 97 JJ Hahn Shiraz which was a total disaster. It was almost undrinkable. I can't believe that this is a $90 bottle of wine. When the GP get it right, its great, but boy they missed the mark on this one. 78pts "

"I've also had the 02 Kalleske Shiraz on more than one occasion. I do see a bit of VA in the wine, although its not out of control if you like that style. As far as pricing, it would be a real good wine at around $25 to $30. The fact that the wine is going to be around the $75 range is a joke. I doubt anyone who pays that much money will find that they got what they paid for. I believe the wine was made from third leaf fruit and it shows."

clearly this is not a one way street.
Note: I have not tried this wine, but as an earlier poster was accused of making a false note I thought this would be a useful comparison.

Actually, I think you will find that if you put these threads in context that the ones degrading the wines for VA and price-point are actually US importers who were NOT selected to represent the wine, therefore their opinion is VERY suspect.
