TN 2002 Mamre Brook Shiraz, 2002 O'Leary Walker Shiraz

Post by Chuck »

These wines appear in many best value quaffer lists. Can anyone provide TN's and ratings on them? Also where can they be purchased for $16?

Chuck, check your messages re prices. I haven't tried the Mamre Brook yet, I hope Ric doesn't mind me posting this from the forthcoming Ch 4 of his SA trip that I'm reviewing for him:

Mamre Brook 2002 Shiraz sells for $25 at CD but can often be found on special for a lot less. Bright and vibrant, dark purple in colour, the bouquet is exciting from the first sniff and shows excellent fruit purity with well judged vanillin oak. The palate is no slouch either; the wonderful fruit purity is well and truly delivered with a spicy uptake and sweet underlying layer of chocolate and anise. Smooth, dusty tannins back a firm consistency for this solid weight, well developed wine. The best under this label for some time, it is rated as Highly Recommended with **** for value and is worth buying. It should also cellar into the medium term

The O'leary Walker is in my cellar, a definite good value buy is my rating.
Cheers
Brian
Life's too short to drink white wine and red wine is better for you too! :-)

RB,

Thanks for the notes. Will try one tonight however the 15% alcohol is of concern.

Chuck,
I had the Mamre Brook Shiraz 2002 the other night and alcohol is not a concern as long as you are not going to drink a couple of glasses on an empty stomach then drive. This is an outstanding wine, I had it blind and thought it must be one of the expensive ones but it wasn't. Utterly sensational colour, opaque purple black almost right to the rims where it shows crimson purple for a millimetre or so. Chocolate, mocha, wonderfully fine grained tannins, concentrated red fruits and liquid chcocolate in the palate, it has the structure to stand up to the alcohol, that's for sure.
It is a steal at my local wine shop here in Auckland for $18.95 a bottle.
Cheers,
Sue

From an earlier post for information:
2002 Saltram Mamre Brook Shiraz
Glass staining red purple colour. Lots of blackberry and plums with some vanillan oak but not overdone. Very fruit dominated. Palate follows the nose, rich and dense but unlike the Ingolby lovely acid cut, good balance and quite a long finish. Just as importantly the alcohol (15% - but I'd bet it is more ) doesn't poke out or burn. I have a feeling it was unfiltered or only lightly filtered as this morning I noticed grape residual in bottm of bottle and glasses. No complexity yet, maybe for me a bit too fruit sweet yet the acid really helps to keep it together. Far better proposition than the Ingolby. maybe not my style but as CC would say - excellent for what it is - bought for $15.99

ps had a 2001 Howard Park Scottsdale Shiraz last night - lovely spicy mid weight shiraz with beautifully delineated dark berry fruits, ,long finish though the acid is still a bit spiky. Much more linear and structured than the Mamre Brook and a far better food wine.

Cheers

Paul
