Penfolds 2001 Bin Range Q's? 2001 707 longevity.and 98 BL TN

Post by Martin Phillipson »

Hi All

2001 Bin Range has arrived here. Which should I buy? Usually go for 28, 128 & 389. What are your thoughts. How is the 2002 Grenache Shiraz blend (Bin 138?)

Also, will the 707 last until 2019, my first kid was born in 2001 and this is one of the few Australian reds I'll get here that will prob last that long. Should I invest?

Finally I tried one of my 98 BL and was mightily disappointed. Very lean, not particularly fruity and not a whole lot of fun to drink. Paled in comparison to a 1996 BL opened about a month ago. Hope it was a duff bottle.

Cheers

M

The following is a link to my previous comments on the 2001 Bin range last month:

I haven't tried the super-premiums.

It's interesting how varied the comments are about the 1998 BL - a lot of bottle/batch variation for a relatively young wine.

Martin, opinion seems to vary on which is the best of the bins, I've seen all four of them find favour with different people. My pick is the 128, this is the first time I've ever rated this wine. The 28 is more savoury than it has been in the past. I didnt like the 407 (but others have) not very varietal, and the 389 is very good but somehow a bit boring.

I think the 01 707 will comfortably last to 2019 if well cellared.

cheers

Martin,

I have tasted 2001 707 along with RWT and grange 99. the 707 was the wine of the night to me. As Wizz said, 707 will last til 2019 and beyond comfortablely if well cellared.

here is my note.
Bin 707 2001
This is the WOTN. It has a very distinct toffee, coffee aroma. The palate is powerful and round. The tannins is dusty and sweet. The finish is extremely long. This wine will live for a long time with the amount of fruit and tannins packed in the bottle. A very delicious and well made wine.

RWT Shiraz 2001
A very musclular wine but not as round and powerful as the 707. The palate is spicy with hint of cigar and tobacco. The tannin is fine and silky. A nice wine to drink now, but will hold for many years. This wine is second behind the Bin 707
