Re: Verticals - Comparative Tastings or Compulsive Behaviour?
Doing a vertical for educational purposes, to learn vintage variation, sounds great. Doing it just for the sake of picking winners and scoring wouldn’t interest me... unless it's your absolute favorite wine or your job. And if it was my favorite wine to be honest I'd rather spread the enjoyment out ...

At a guess, not overripe and overalcoholic. Perhaps more savoury. Less ripefruit and less oak. Not that Europe has been immune to Bob Parker disease, but they were somewhat less affected in certain areas. Even in Australia, once upon a time older wines were often less fruit forward and less alcoholi...

Re: Aussie cellar door wine sales booming
I love the fact lots of cellar doors charge a refundable-on-purchase fee for tasting. Especially for medium to small wineries operating on a margin running on blood sweat and tears. We love to taste but are a bit over buying at CD as it’s just too much hassle bringing wine home or putting a case of ...

Thanks! I'm ashamed to say that, although it was very good, at the time I went there I knew very little about Italian wine and hardly took advantage of it.michel wrote: great post

Re: The big question - stemware
In times past I’ve bought & used XL5s then Spiegelaus, then Riedels then Zaltos and the Zaltos are the epitome, beating all the others by far. To me Zaltos are about far more than just ultralight weight. The first time somebody in our group brought Zalto Universals I was intently skeptical that ...

Re: What unpopular (wine) opinions do you have?
I guess you can say that for a lot of metaphors used in wine if you want to literalise them. For me crunchy alludes to good acid attack on the front palate with green/stalks/capsicum on the follow, akin to snapping a stick of celery, you have the impression on chomping on the wine. Linear is a good...

Re: What unpopular (wine) opinions do you have?
Crunchy in a TN is a red flag for wankery.
Crunchy is a descriptor for solid textures that make an audibly sharp sound when bitten. Crackers are crunchy. Ice is crunchy. Cornflakes are crunchy.
Wine is a liquid and unless it’s frozen to solid ice or you are having it on cornflakes IT IS NOT CRUNCHY.

I’m also going to make an exception to the “agree” above. This one may be unpopular with a couple of friends here but I know they can take it. ;) Blue cheese always detracts from from dry wine and even many sweet wines, and does so for a long time after eating it (15 mins sometimes assuming no palat...

Re: What unpopular (wine) opinions do you have?
That wine always needs to be paired with the correct food match. Feck it, sometimes I want some fish but also want a Cab Sav. Agree within limits. Maybe not fish and cab for me. While we’re on the topic, I’m going to stir the pot and piss off some Somms and maybe the French. For High quality wine I...

I find Margaret River Cabs too green and stalky, athlough I’ll put up with it for a well aged high quality example such as an old Jack Mann.

Yes indeed all intended as a joke, Michel. I forget that not everyone on the forums is aware of common forum terminology, so you have my apologies. On online forums, very old threads that have been brought back after many years are usually called zombie threads. I found it humorous because his name ...

Relaxed Yarra weekend highlights
Went down to the Yarra for the long weekend (yes AFL was on, no we didn't go there for it). We didn't do any bookings (given it was AFL weekend) but of the publicly open cellar doors we went to, highlights were: Pimpernel - after hearing good things both here and whilst down there, had to visit. Lov...

Yeah fair enough, except I forgot the bottle was full of water and along with a bunch of other wines, I took it along to a mate's place to finish off! Hmm, looks very pale, what's happened to the nose, I normally like this wine.......  :D  one of my brothers did that to a bottle ...

Also rediscovered the joy of Sting's music,... his classic music that is. When he's not prancing around playing the lute singing obscure poetry. Sting Live in Berlin is one of the greatest things I heard in the past few years. And yes, it has occurred to me that I'm officially old when I like to hea...

Much like Tim, love anything as long as it's good. Rock music and modern incarnations have always been a firm favorite though - Beatles, Queen, Zeppelin, Bowie, Rolling Stones, Lennon, Eagles, INXS, U2, Police, Talking Heads, Crowded House up to somewhat more modern favorites such as White Stripes, ...

It was a really interesting experiment, thanks again for setting it up! Although you have no involvement with importing and selling them Tim, with those results maybe you should. :) Probably a good advertisement for decanting as well? Agreed, it highlights the worth of decanting young (and/or screwc...

1st born 2011, so WA and Hunter Valley for her. Woodlands, leeuwin, Tyrrells, lakes folly 2nd born 2014, haven’t really started on that yet as I like to buy excess stock at auction and not a lot from that vintage hitting the market yet. I wouldn’t hold out too much hope for excess 2014 Hunter stock...

The New Zealand Trip index. Links to requests for info, and reports
Decided to throw this together to help those looking to visit NZ for wine! From searching histories, it's a topic that seems to come up very regularly. I suspect that one reason people can't find the threads is because the forum doesn't search for "NZ", and some threads don't contain NZ in...
