Re: Help needed from our NZ mates

It's a bit hard to give you accurate advice without knowing what else you are doing or whether this is all wine tourism, and how long you will be in each place. Probably the best thing to do is visit the tourist information office at each place, get an updated wine trail map, and see what is open - ...

Re: Any of you Aucklanders going to the Te Mata Showcase?

Craig - Coleraine is $75 for a single bottle at cellar door, vs $66 and $68 from Caro's or First Glass. I don't mind the price being the same, but I see no reason why it should be more expensive at cellar door or mailing list especially if when purchased this way you still have to add freight. Sure ...

Re: ANy of you Aucklanders going to the Te Mata Showcase?

No - I'm really going off Te Mata (as a company rather than the wine). Thurs evening at the Viaduct means either taxi or parking fees to add to the $30 charge they're already heading up, and I've tasted all the wines already bar the 09 Bordeaux blends. As a vent can I say that Te Mata: 1] Have highe...

I also agree that its a moot point, given it was almost certainly the finest new zealand wine I've ever tasted. Judy should be justly proud of what she's achieved in unfashionable Clevedon - its truly world class wine. Saving my pennies now for release... His Bob-ness agrees with y'all too - he's g...

Picked up a six pack at duty free in a jet-lagged haze this morning, and would love a bit of advice on drinking windows if you're familiar with the below: - Pegasus Bay 2007 pinot noir - Craggy Range 2006 Sophia - Mills Reef 2007 Elspeth Yep - very familiar with the Pegasus pinot. I'm finishing up ...

Re: 2007 Te Mata Estate Coleraine

A storm in a teacup IMO. He rates it once at 18+/20 and the other time 19/20 so fairly consistent and I'm sure we are all aware how wines can taste different on different days and different surroundings. The other point of interest is that the notes come from different tastings - in the higher point...

Re: 10 days in a van, Wellington to Auckland

Hmm, 10 days, hmm family... After your day in Martinborough I'd drive up to Hawke's Bay and spend a few days there. The Te Awanga peninsula is lovely and you can visit the gannets as well as Clearview Winery. Napier is a pretty cool city with quite a bit to do around it. It's a great part of the cou...

I haven't tried those vintages but the 06 Rise and Shine was a very good pinot, much better than the usual Kim Crawford range, and the 06 and 07 Spitfires are both well made SB in a fairly traditional NZ style. As a rule of thumb, the only Kim Crawford wines that I find interesting are the Single Pa...

I'm absolutely convinced you can't just open wines and pop them on the table and expect them to be good. IMO even screwcapped wines taste better 10-20 minutes after they have been opened and I now routinely open screwcapped wines several minutes away from the time I expect to pour them. Medium youth...

Drinking with food does reduce peak alcohol levels, and this is very likely to reduce your chances of suffering from acute effects of alcohol- injury and acute toxicity. Whether it reduces chronic toxic effects (e.g. cirrhosis) is, I think, an unknown and probably an almost unanswerable question. I...

Would be nice if we could get a glass for each wine - if 10 wines then 10 glasses and actually line up the wines - see how they are evolving. Anyone tried this? Any good? Craig or Sue? It's in a more classic/French style than many NZ chardonnays. I have one further bottle which wi...
