Re: Sunday 20th Feb Drinkie Poos
A pretty quiet week after an excellent night of wines at our recent capital tasters dinner ( http://forum.auswine.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11812 ). A bottle of the excellent value and very quafable 2010 Yalumba Y Series Pinot Grigio and also the very enjoyable 2008 Pio Cesare Barbera D'Alba wh...

Re: Capital Tasters February 2010 Wine Dinner - Rubicon
Yes, it was a great dinner with some excellent food by Rubicon complimenting the excellent wine generously provided by David. With such a high standard of wine it is tough to pick out a highlight or favourite as each wine had its own dazzling effect. However, 2 days later the balance of power and fi...

2006 Rockford 'Local Growers' Semillon: excellent summer drinking. Lemony, grilled nuts, a little grassy herbaceousness. Good length and intensity. I love that it's released with 4 years bottle age. Great value at $18 per bottle. 2005 Hillcrest Premium Yarra Valley Pinot Noir: I was starting to thi...

A few highlights recentley: Numerous bottles of Rockford Black Shiraz . As good as they all were, i still have the Jospeh Sparkling Red a smidge ahead of it as my favourite in the style. Plenty of Xmas/New Year's Champagne, with the standout being the clean, crisp beautifully structured 2002 Moet &a...

Two excellent reds over the weekend were the recent highlights. They being: 2004 Tim Adams 'Aberfeldy' Shiraz: classical Clare medium weight. Menthol, ecualypt nose with a hint of aniseed and vanilla. Lovely balanced wine with fine tannins and fresh blackberry and cherry like fruit. Looking promisin...

Capital Tasters #12 - Return to Aubergine
Last night, we held our monthly Canberra tasting group dinner at the excellent Aubergine in Griffith. It was my turn to provide the 6 wines and throw in a bit of options skulduggery to keep everyone on their toes. The wines showed pretty well, particularly the whites, with the reds probably served a...

Sacrificed a bottle of 2008 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro 2 weeks ago and it was stunning. Drinking superbly now with obvious upside to it in the cellar. I would make sure you drink it before the heavier styled BP and Eileen Hardy.

1996 Lanson Gold Label: this was a really bright bottle, with lively lemon ascidity, fresh cut green apples and some toasty, oxidative notes on the finish. Very nice and drinking close to its peak in my view (I like it with some zing). 2009 Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling: I love this wine. Great flo...

2002 Rockford Rifle Range Cab Sav - good old school Barossa Cab Sav. Dry, earthy, leathery notes interplaying with jubey black fruit, hints of green capsicum and dried herbs. Still a lick of firm tannins. Yum. Still time on its side too. 2001 Seppelt Chalambar Shiraz - wow, this was a $90 6-pack pu...

Capital tasters #10 - Rubicon (Mk II)
Our regular Canberra tasting group met for our monthly dinner at Rubicon in Griffith last night. It was Tammy's turn to provide the wines and the options to keep us on our toes. The food at Rubicon was largely excellent as were the wines which provided a few suprises in options. We drank: 2002 Veuve...

Benevelli Piero “Bricco Ravera†Barbera d’Alba 2006 - had a veal ragu simmering away for 4 hours callian out for something Italian. This fitted the bill perfectly. In the decanter for 3 hours or so, with blueberry, earthy tobacco, vanilla and grilled nuts notes wafting out. Plums...

Was defintely a night of great wines. 1996 Pol Roger was how vintage champagne should be - complex bready notes, intergrated, loooooong with refreshing acid drawing through the wine. YUM! The 1998 Leo Buring Eden Valley Riesling was pretty much knackered - either slightly oxidised or scalped by TCA....

Jim Barry Watervale Riesling 2009
Very nice mid-week riesling. Lots of lemon and lime as expected and extremely slurpable - a bargain.
Yalumba 'Running with Bulls' Barossa Tempranillo 2008
Just below full-bodied, chewy, spicy fruit, so drinkable. Great midweeker.

Re: Yalumba Galway Vintage Reserve Claret 1967 - Advice-
According to a quick search on the Langtons website, the last 1967 Galway Claret that went to auction (in 2007) sold for $59.
So at that price, I would say forget about selling it, rip the cork out and enjoy a bit of Australian wine history!

For me the 2006 was a very good Black label (with 2004 and then 2005 behind in that order) and look forward to the 2008. The 2008 Shiraz is back in business (best since 1998 for mine) and I hope the 2008 Cabernet is at a similar level. Agreed, the 2008 Shiraz is an unbelievably good value wine at t...

Wynns Shiraz 2008 - unbelievable value. Great drinking in front of the footy - plummy, earthiness, slightly oaky but not too noticable. Good value at $20 per bottle and ridiculous value at the $12 i saw it a chain store retailer later. A solid high 88-89 point wine.
