Re: 1999 Dalwhinnie Moonambel Shiraz

Great story Dang. I don't recall the exact year, but it was somewhere in the mid-90's. After running through a massive downpour to get to Walter's Wine Bar in Southbank, Melbourne, 2 friends and I finally sat down and shared a Moonambel Shiraz. I don't recall the vintage. Although I always liked win...

Great Sydney BYO Restaurants

Dear Forum I haven't logged in for a long time, so my apologies that I am only logging in to ask advice on BYO restaurants in Sydney (CBD and surrounds preferably), but I need some help. I'm looking for the type of place that appreciates and caters for me bringing a magnum of 1998 Mt Mary Quintet an...

Re: Your Cellar Treasure

There's more to this topic than meets the eye. It's made me think about my entire cellar and try and pick just 3 wines I value immensely so as to be categorised as my cellar treasures. Well I couldn't quite do it, so I've added my little twist to the answer. 1983 and 1986 Grange Magnums: Both slated...

thanks for the advice

I forgot to ask a question and hoping you wouldn't mind sharing your views as well.

I'm also taking a 1997 HOG (750ml) to the same lunch, so any views on the order of the wines served ?
HOG then Grange is my thought.

many thanks

Help with 86 Magnum of Grange

Hi all

I have a magnum of 86 Grange that I will be drinking at a lunch in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone has experience with this wine and could pass on their comments about decanting / air time etc.

many thanks

Wine order for a 50th dinner

Hello all I was hoping to get some help on the order of a few wines I have for a 50th dinner. The line up is: 1986 Magnum Grange 1991 Magnum Grange 1997 Hill of Grace 1990 Wynns John Riddoch 2001 Magnum Lakes Folly Cab Should any cabernets be in the line up with grange and HOG ? Needless to say, the...

Mike I've all those three wines and agree they are excellent and all long living I think the Tally has at least 5-10 yrs before hitting it's straps. I'm about to try a 2001 soon and will post my thoughts. The 82 JR is a pleasant surprise that it lasted so long and so well. I've had most vintages inc...

I have many Cullens and Moss Wood in my cellar and have found both lacking when drunk under 10 yrs of age. The 2001 Moss Wood is a fabulous cabernet and may well turn out to be one of the greatest in a few more years. I think it has almost reached it peak drinking window now but will hold strongly f...

Re: TN: Mount Mary Quintet 1990-2008 Vertical 7/11/11

Ian that's an awesome line up and great notes I think that MM are perhaps one of, if not Australia's best Cab / Cab blend and would stand toe to toe with some of the best French wines of similar style, but at a fraction of their cost. I noticed that you missed the famed 2006 vintage. MM is one of th...

Re: TN: Cullen Diana Madeleine 1994-2009 Vertical 5/9/11

Ian Really good notes and what a great line up of Cullens. I've cellared Cullen for many years and have been patient with them, but overall, a tad dissapointed with the development that they have shown. I've expected better given the stellar reviews they get. Maybe I'm missing something, but I had a...

Re: TN: Petaluma Coonawarra Merlot 1996

Nice note David Over the years, I've found Petaluma cabs ( and the cab/merl ) to age very, very well, but they need at least 15 - 20 years to bring out their best. I rate them ahead of the Wynns black label but just below the John Riddoch once 20 years get notched up. Ain't too many wines that can l...

HELP - My cellar is leaking

After a decade of dryness, I've found that my cellar is leaking from somewhere. Not a lot of water, just small puddles that accumulate as per the slant of the concrete floor, but this is the second time in two weeks now given all of the rain that Melb has had. Does anybody have any idea what could p...

I've got a back up 1966 Cheatau Yaldara - but I'm not sure about that one holding up either.

I still have 6 of the 1998 St Peter's shiraz and I would not touch them for another 2- 3 yrs. If you do want to open one, I would decant for 2 hrs without a problem. Last time I recall drinking one of these, I think it was still very tight and had not fully developed and I wasn't overly impressed as...

I wouldn't say that the 94 JR is one of the better vintages, although still a quality cabernet. The best I've had are the 86 ( a standout ) the 90, 88 and 92 were all outstanding and I can't wait to crack open my case of 96 in a few more years. I've had a 96 at a restaurant, it was too closed as was...

Ian Really good notes and a great line up overall. Cabernet is still King for me. I've tried most of these wines and rate the following: 1998 HIghbank - very underated and a classic cab blend, you may have had a dud bottle 1990 / 92 St George - Agree they can be thin and uninspiring at times, but a ...
