Re: Weekly wrap up- Sunday 27th June

2002 Tahbilk Marsanne
I don't have much experience with this wine but it was a little too heavy and full bodied for my liking... lacked freshness.

For some reason, Batailley does not seem to have been released so far in Australia. :?

Batailley is the best PQR of the vintage IMO.

Interested in the Wisdom whites... can you offer any comment on their flavour profile and ageing propsects?

2006 Seppelt Chalambar Shiraz... coming along nicely but not ready yet. Prominent tannin, lovely twiggy character and spicy fruit. Acid profile provides for a nice long, refreshing finish. I totally agree and yet people keep opening this wine to drink now. It is definitely one of those Chalambars t...

2001 Tatachilla Foundation Shiraz... volatile and disjointed with a short finish... long passed its best. I speculate it may have copped some heat damage at some point. 2006 Seppelt Chalambar Shiraz... coming along nicely but not ready yet. Prominent tannin, lovely twiggy character and spicy fruit. ...

First visit home (Perth) for over 18 months last week so a good chance to raid the stash given the numerous social events the week brought. In no particular order: 2006 Picardy Chardonnay : This has come together nicely after showing its oak a little when I first tasted it a couple of years ago. Com...

Brand Australia is copping a hammering at the moment and Brand Barossa seems to be at the front line of it. I am aware of some brand Australia initiatives... are Barossa wine-makers on the front foot with anything?

My local merchant had about 20 barrel samples on taste today and La Conseillante was there.... Powerful and very prominent but fine tannins, a big moutful of wine here... you will need to be patient but it is good.

Julio Thank you for the excellent notes. Sadly I doubt we will be offered the same opportunity down here. From everything I have read, my fantasy list was almost identical being Figeac, Pontet Canet and Haut Batailley. The one addition was La Conseillante. Was it on display? Mark It was Mark but I ...

Ok, worked my way through the better part of these (m) 2009s last night - very tired palate by the end. Some chickened out on bringing their barrel samples at the last minute and only showed older wines - a little disappointing. The best wines tasted on the night were 96 Yquem and 04 Cheval Blanc......

Making use of sommeliers

Read an article in one of the daily papers over here suggesting that most Brits do not use the services of a sommelier at a restaurant despite knowing very little about wine. Got me thinking that I tend to use them only once I have narrowed my options on a wine list, rather than selecting my food an...

Re: 2009 Bordeaux Thread

I am going to this (http://www.bibendum-wine.co.uk/retail/e ... sting_2010) tasting next week... I have very little experience with really young Bordeaux so my notes will need to be taken in that context... I'll report report back to the best of my ability.

Any wines in particular from the list that people are particularly interested in?

Kitchener Cabinets - CT or Peltier?

Apologies for posting another thread on wine fridges but I have a very specific conundrum and I can't find an answer using the search function... I am tossing up between two CT204 or one Peltier 430... It seems to me that the Peltier is the superior option in terms of quality due to less/no vibratio...

Woodlands are massive proponents of Malbec and use it in almost all of their flagship Cabs. Their Reserve de la Cave Malbec is seriously good but very, very limited production.

A couple of bottles over the weekend that provoked some thoughts on the whole price-value-reputation conundrum: Chateau Langoa Barton 2002 {St Julien, Third Growth} - This was drinking ok - it showed some nice, not too overbearing oak, lots of fruit concentration and furry tannins, the requisite ac...

Nice write up.

Encouraged to hear that the 2007 Abbot's Prayer was on song - an earlier vintage was one of the wines that sparked my interest in wine generally. Would you say the 2007 is a keeper? It was a difficult vintage in SA as a general rule.

I have been keeping my eye out for the release of the 2007 Moss Wood Cab to lay a few down. I thought, for longevity, I might buy a few magnums. Interesting that their 2006 magnum price is 170% higher than their bottle price. Cullen, on the other hand, have a 110% differential which seems to make fa...

2004 Woodlands Margaret Cabernet Merlot- Mouth-filling blackberries, violets, cedar oak, with hints of tobacco, and forest floor. Tremendous length, elegantly poised with succulent tannins. A sweet chenin from the Loire Valley would do the trick - it would have the structure and flavour profile to match the tart, sweet flavour of the passionfruit.

Julio is actually of London currently... although he would love to be of NY one day. The collection is all back in the home town - Perth. The 300 milestone made me question my storage and I have managed to persuade the the better half to allow me to purchase a wine fridge - going for the Peltier 430...
