Thankyou Gavin
I will open a bottle of the Cabernet Malbec, and also have a look at the 2000 Shiraz, and report back.

Birks to drink now?

Hello All Just back from Uk again(!) and have been checking the cellar. I would really appreciate some opinions on how the following Birks are drinking - yes, I know they are long term developers! 2000 Shiraz 2004 Cabernet Malbec 2005 Cabernet Malbec 2005 Shiraz Mataro It's great to be back in very ...

Thankyou everyone - I shall have a crack at the $8.95 for casual drinking, then get some Caliope when I make a visit to Rutherglen. I agree, Rutherglen makes some marvellous fortifieds, of which we are very fond. I guess with the 'table wines' of the area, it's a matter of personal taste - my wine c...

Hi Ric
Thanks for your reply - I shall establish if it's Caliope - I always loved Bullers back in the 70's, but have not had the opportunity to taste it for so many years......maybe I'll just take a punt on it anyway!

Bullers of Rutherglen

Hello All, I haven't visited the forum for some time, due to our move from UK to South Australia - it's been a hectic time, but we are now happily settled on the Fleurieu Peninsula, and loving life here, after 20 years in UK, and are starting to fill our cellar. I have the opportunity to purchase Bu...

I think the Mollydooker labels are the wierdest I have ever seen.
Maybe the Wedouree labels could do with some updating - but well, I guess we are used to it after all these years, so best left as is.

Brian Thankyou for your explanation of the Birks situation. I hadn't realised that 2007 was such a bad vintage in Australia. I wonder, if they do bottle the wine under the alternative name, how they will market it, since they appear to almost exclusively sell by mail order . Thankyou also for your a...

Can somebody please elucidate on the 'Wendouree 2007 being de-classified' ? Does it mean Wendouree are not bottling any of their 2007 vintage, or that the winery has been sold to others?
If it's not been sold, why would they not be producing any wine from the 2007 vintage?

Hi all I have just had a hit on my credit card for £538(approx $1300) from Wendouree, so I'm expecting a very nice surprise to be waiting for me when I get back to Australia. We have just agreed a sale on our house here in UK, so hope to be living in McLaren Vale by end of November. We sure will ...

Well, tonight we tried the Aberfely 2004 - opened it at 8am, and had dinner at 8.30pm, so plenty of time for it to breathe. No nose, which worried me somewhat, but it's young, and has a long way to go. Smooth as silk, nicely balanced, but doesn't have that OOOmph of a Birks..... but definitely the C...

Yes David, Lots of us have - they are marvellous, very hard to acquire, and require long cellaring - well worth the wait - that's if you can get on the 'list'. Good luck.

We are moving to S.A(near McLaren Vale) after 20 years in UK, so I think we have to try this restaurant.
So much choice of excellent wines and restaurants in Adelaide - we have much to explore!

Nosing comment

Many years ago I was at a very fine but 'stuffy' restaurant in Melbourne called The Beefeater, with a man who was trying to impress me. He had ordered a 12 year old bottle of Seven Hills. The sommelier duly brought it, already decanted and breathed, and I was asked to taste and comment. Upon nosing ...

Aberfeldy Shiraz 2004

I have just bought a bottle of 2004 Aberfeldy here in UK for £25 - about $60. Can anyone tell me how much it is selling for in Australia? Tim Adams don't have any cellar door prices on their website, but I imagine they must do cellar door. We are moving back to Oz (Mclaren Vale) soon, after 20 ye...

Thankyou Brian and Stuart, and all others who commented - very helpful. I have now read the thread on the Aberfeldy, and can get some here in UK, although it will likely be too young to drink - so not much use. Sounds a wonderful idea to have a dinner tasting the same vintages of Birks and Aberfeldy...

Birks Wendouree

Hello - I'm new to the forum, but have been an ardent Birks fan since 1969, and had the pleasure of drinking wine with Roly. I have lived in UK the past 20 years, but am returning to Oz soon, and and have been on the mailing list 2 years now, so have a small stash waiting for me.... Only problem is,...
