Re: What is the most egregious wine pricing you have seen?

If the Stonewell is always made from Hammerling's fruit then clearly the Masterson diminishes the Stonewell. However, considering it may also be a blend, as mentioned by Huon Hooke, then it is likely made from a selection of the old vine sources. This leads me to say that since the Stonwell was a b...

Personally - certainly not enough to be drinking them as quaffers, but somewhat perversely, often most enjoyable when done as so.

Re: What are the characteristics of a quaffer?

My definition is simple - a bottle that poses no logical or emotional opposition to opening.

It's also a somewhat dangerous definition, as sometimes the only logically & emotionally correct thing to do is to open that $100 bottle, haha.

Re: Standish

Is it to make this Barolo like wine from barossa shiraz look like another person alluded to? Just to qualify this as I made that comment - the poster I was replying to had specifically brought up Barolo, hence why I made the comparison. Not that it necessarily sets out to be a Barolo styled wine or...

Re: Standish

When it comes to "Barossa" Shiraz, as a benchmark I always bring it back to Rockford, at about $60 per bottle, you tend to know what you get. Dan's charging $100 a pop, sounds like his consumers are confused over the vineyards etc. Wondering where does value lie? Or just a gross margin gr...

Re: Standish

I'm pretty sure it's half way between Mt Edelstone & Hill of Grace - Mt Edelstone being south of the Hutton Vale airstrip & Lamella being sourced from the vineyard to the north? I could be mistaken though.

Re: Standish

They're all pretty distinct locations & styles. As mentioned previously the Hutton Vale vineyard is a skip & a hop away from the Hill of Grace vineyard, albeit the vines aren't quite as old as HoG. The Schubert Theorem vineyard is also just around the corner from where Torbreck source The La...

Re: Standish

Most Standish wines come in around the 14.5% mark, the '16 Relic being an exception, not the rule. Definitely not in the flabby territory, at least none that I've ever encountered. Also, interesting you mention Barolo - the Standish Lamella in particular probably has more in common with Barolo on th...

Re: Standish

2017s should be making their way out soon, anyone had the pleasure of trying any yet?

I hear it's the same lineup of wines as last year, which is apparently a first.

Re: Barossa Shiraz named best in the world

*London Wine Competition, which only appears to be in its second year running and, from a quick gander, featuring a relatively minuscule amount of competition.

Only $549/bottle.
I'd happily bet they have no issues selling this out.

Re: To Magnum or Not, That is the Question

I picked up a 2016 Standish The Standish magnum a few weeks ago, I'm hopeful the larger format will help push that into good birth year territory. Definitely hurts the cellar space though!

Re: Keeping wine cool in a decanter

I leave a little space in the wine fridge for a smallish decanter. Pour & give it 10-15 mins for a bigger red, or tuck straight into it if it's a Pinot or Nebbiolo.

Re: Tips for a rookie wine collector

I'm probably around 3 or 4 years ahead of you in regards to building out my collection, so still rather new to it all in the greater scheme of things. Here's my take on things for what it's worth though. My #1 rule is simple - wine is for drinking. It's too easy to get caught up in drinking windows,...
