Great thread. Sub $25 - 2013 Wickhams Gippsland Pinot Noir (this came second in a blind pinot night we had including some grand and 1er cru Burgundies, and some classic Aussie/NZ pinots) Sub $50 - 2005 Rockford Rifle Range Cabernet Sauvignon Sub $100 - 1996 Mount Pleasant Lovedale Semillon Over $100...

Hi maybs, For christmas fizz this year I've got a mixture of red and white. I have a bottle each of 1998 Barossa Valley Estates Sparkling E & E and 2012 Disgorged Primo Joseph Sparkling red. I'd THOROUGHLY recommend both (PM me if you want the location of the BVE, they have some in stock still a...

Bottom photo looks ok - not necessarily because of the depth, but in terms of tone. Top photo looks like strawberry juice. Sure, it looks strange, but if it tastes good, then no worries!

Re: Help me choose a wine!

Definitely not a fan of mid 2000s Greenock Creek, but I think they've reigned in the ridiculous alcohol levels, and settled around 14-15.5 most wines. Great wines when they aren't overpowered with hot alcohol. Re Hunter, I would go some of the single vineyard/sacred sites Tyrrell's for longevity, bu...

Re: Help me choose a wine!

I've just done some figures in the attachment assuming the following: 1. 20 Year (21 including current year), not 36 Year 2. 2 wines, Tyrrell's Vat 1 ($40) and Greenock Creek Apricot Block ($38) 3. Costs were costs for most recent releases 4. Costs go up with a high(ish) inflation rate of 3%, then r...

2008 Rockford Local Growers Semillon - as always, amazing. My favourite non-Hunter semillon by streets. It reminded me of Tyrrell's Vat 63 last night, the oak subtlety giving that layer of complexity without drowning out those delicious lemon, butter, pea pod flavours.

Just flicking through Langton's:

Penfolds Bin 389 - though it will exceed $60 when not on uber-special, and who knows - TWE will probably price the 2012 at $4,000
Craiglee Shiraz - $53 - have heard anecdotally it lasts 30+ in an average vintage

Re: Help me choose a wine!

Great project Dave! As much as i am a huge Hunter advocate, a Hunter red is out of the question if you want 36 years of sustained production. Both 2008 and 2012 were red washouts, and no premiums produced. Vat 1 is a great wine, but 36 years is very optimistic for the oldest wines. I had a 1989 rece...

Can't go wrong, but it's a real shame they weren't 2004, 2008, 2010 - all cracking St Henri's!

Surprised at the lack of Hunter enthusiasm though - 05, 07 and 09 are all amazing red vintages in the Hunter.

Re: Which wine to cellar for my children?

All great Hunter shiraz vintages. Brokenwood Graveyard (budget $140 per bottle average), Tyrrell's 4 Acres or Vat 9 (budget $70 per bottle), Thomas Kiss ($70 ave.) should all live the 18-21 years. My money in the longevity, quality, value stakes is on the 4 Acres, but the Brokenwood and Vat 9 are mo...

Re: Chris Ringland Shiraz 2012 V Penfolds Bin 9 2012

My money is on the Bin 9 - surprisingly great value. Really rich, moreish, and surprisingly drinkable now, but will age.

I haven't ever warmed to CR's cheaper shirazes - someone else may disagree.

Not too bad, some good QPR choices in there. I would throw a plug in for the 2012 Hentley Farm The Marl Shiraz at $25 if you can source some. There is also a thread on good quality cheap shiraz that might be worth a look. Some great suggestions in there.

Any reason for the 2009? Sure it was a great year, but all reports I've read say the 2011 is better, and the 2014 will be the best for a loooooong time (possibly ever). I'll be saving my money to go very big on the 2014 Hunter wines.

The two independents I buy from these days both offer a range of back-vintages that they guarantee as they have been stored since release in their own maturation rooms. More often than not, when I want to buy something other than a weeknight quaffer, I go to one of these. Never had a bottle heat or ...

Re: Aged Red Wines - what am I doing wrong?

I second Duncan's thoughts. Find something with pedigree, from a good vintage in a mid-price range so you can get more, and it will potentially develop well, but faster than the uber-expensive wines. Look at things like Greenock Creek Alice's Shiraz - $32 or so from the cellar door, and the 2012 (gr...

Re: Wendouree mailer 2014

I've had plenty of Hunter sems and shiraz under screwcap, and I think there are some misconceptions about the way they are developing. The lack of slow oxidation means that the colour isn't developing nearly as fast, but I think the secondary characters are still coming along. I had a 99 HVD Semillo...

Actually pleasantly surprised the Grange RRP didn’t go up at all – I would have expected another $100 on top given the vintage.

Also, just at Costco and they have received a bit of 2010 St Henri - $77 a bottle, screwcap. I bought 2.

Makes sense to have most of the financial year to sell the Icon and Luxury Collection instead of jamming it into the last quarter. They might get a few more sales through Christmas as well. That's true. Seems strange though if this is a reaction to poor sales from the most recent release - why drip...

Thanks the notes Dan. What is your view on cellaring for the Vat 9 say? I guess you didn't try the Johnno's as sold out? For my tastes, I will happily leave them a good 7-8 years before opening one. I like Hunter shiraz in that mid range - not fully developed and aged (although with the modern Hunt...
