Re: Port Barrel Info

If you secure the lid it will limit the amount of air that the port gets exposed to and therefore limit the oxidation. Wether the amount of air already in the container is anough to over oxidate the port i dunno. Oxidation isn't really an issue with port. Tawny port is an oxidised style - it's deli...

Re: Port Barrel Info

I'm looking into getting a port barrel for my work social club . What size barrel are you thinking of? If it’s for a work social club, I’d image it’d get a fair amount of port drained from it on a regular basis. If that’s the case, I think a 20L barrel (like most of us u...

Thanks for all the replies Finally, anyone with a Leibherr know what the benefits of having the ventilation turned on/off are? thanks again david My Leibherr doesn't have a switch to turn the ventilation fan on/off. It runs all the time on mine. I've measured the humidity in mine a couple of times,...

The Keg Factory 20L barrels are 43cm end-to-end, excluding the tap.

Re: Wine fridge cellaring temp and other settings

The Chateau cellar caves are a constant 11c all year Are they really though, or is that just the marketing spiel? When I visited Champagne, all the Champagne houses said their caves were at 11c all year round, but no way in hell were they at 11c!!! I was quite comfortable wearing a t-shirt through ...

Re: bulk port

I've recently (a year ago) started a port barrel myself, and have tasted fairly extensively around McLaren Vale, Barossa and Rutherglen looking for the best bulk port(s) to fill it with. Conclusions that I came to are that the best ports come from the Barossa, and my picks would be Seppelt, Liebich,...

Re: Port in Barrels!

I initially used Bulk Port from Chambers Rosewood in Rutherglen. Resulted in a great drop. Decided to try bulk from Grant Burge Barossa. Still nice but think I prefer the result from Chambers. How long had you aged the Chambers port for? I can’t say I was impressed when I tried their ports a...

I noticed the rares are said to be started in 83 which I though was possibly not quite old enough for a rare. I thought in Rutherglen the rares generally had a base material of at least 50 years of age. I think they can technically call it 'Rare' if it's over 15 years old, but that seems silly to m...

Just firm. Doesn't need to be hammered in super tight or anything. Obviously you don't want it so tight that you can't get it out again. The guy from the Keg Factory told me he only puts his in hand tight. I tap mine in lightly with a hammer. To remove just tap lightly side to side until it comes lo...
